Corrosion on wheel hubs

Featured Replies

I've recently discovered corrosion on the wheel hubs of my vRS which is now only 6 months old. It's not the discs or the wheels themselves - it's the actual hubs. The silver paint on the hubs looks pretty nasty in any case but it clearly has no protective qualities.

I've reported it to my local dealer who inform me they've taken another similar complaint recently but don't rate my chances of having this fixed under warranty as the Technical Department won't entertain such a claim.

Is anyone else aware of this issue or has been able to secure a warranty claim for this to be repaired?

Thanks

MH

This is a common problem across lots of makes and models of cars. I can't see you getting new brake discs under warranty just because a bit of surface corrosion however unattractive it looks.

I plan on painting mine as soon as the warmer weather comes

Not a chance of getting a warranty claim, it's not really an issue ( apart from the aesthetics ) if it they bother you, just sort them yourself, I appreciate they look a tad 'not new' but unless the hubs are stainless steel, it's going to happen.

mine has the same problem, mine has 2500 miles on it now.

I am not going to even bother contacting my dealer, i am going to wait till they get really bad then just buy some new ones. don't waste your life trying to get these on warranty as it will just waist your time.

by the way is yours a manual box, if so how is your 2st to 2nd shift.?

Don't buy new ones, just prep and paint the old ones, it will be a damn sight cheaper, and longer lasting before they rust again.

It's not the hubs, you can't see them, they're covered by the disc.

The bell of the disc rusting - this is a common issue on all cars.

Common, especially on BMWs.

Wheel off, wire brush, silver smoothrite spray.

This is what I'll be using, wipe down with brake cleaner, small brush, sorted. No priming or masking needed, dont want overspray on my new car!!!!

If you want a finish that will last, wire-brush off the worst of the rust then prime it with a couple of coats of Hammerite Rust Beater No 1. (Hammerite top-coat itself is rubbish ever since they changed the formula, but their primer is very effective). Then give it a top-coat of whatever you wish, - the aluminium paint as above or even Hammerite top-coat.

i mis read the post i thought he meant the skoda badges.

of its the swivel hub or stub axle you local plating company will plate, or pasivate them for a tener, or you can get them dipped. if you cant be inclined to remove them the alupaint is fine as i have used it myself
