Petrol engines

Featured Replies

Morning all

May go after a petrol model soon and was wondering which were the better engines in a late mk1 or mk2 Octavia. Not after a vrs. What is the economy like if driven gently etc?

Depends on what you want to spend  and how old?

I run a petrol 1.4tsi Superb II (2014) and love its performance and economy - 50mpg possible on a long run, overall average for me over 46mpg. This engine also fitted to the Octavia II but earlier versions (2009/10) did have some cam chain & tensioner issues.

A friend of mine had a 1.4tsi Elegance Octavia (2011?) until recently and except for a trapped stone between disk and backplate the car had no issues from new. Like my Superb if he took it steady he could get over 50mpg.

If I were buying an older car I'd search for 1.6mpi petrol Octavia SE special edition (2011?). It has the bullet proof VAG 8v engine of old mated to a 5 speed box although revs on a motorway higher compared to a 1.4tsi mated to a 6 speed box. Over 40mpg possible if you take it easy and capable of high mileages

MK1 petrol engines were not a strong point (1.8T aside). 1.4 woefully under powered and rare, 1.6 8v OK ish was old tech even at the time and the 2.0 drank oil and pretty naff economy.

150 bhp 1.8T Elegance or L and K would be the pick in my book however they are all pretty old now but issues are usually fairly well documented with known fixes. Easy pick one up for sub £1500.

I have a 1.6 FSI. Pretty indestructible, get around 400mile to a tank without trying although it does liked to be revved to higher ranges for overtaking. Overall it's grand for what I need it for as its only a family mobile

What is the economy like with the 1.8T?

1.4 woefully under powered and rare

I also have a 2001 Octavia  1.4 16v (owned from new) and wouldn't call it woefully under powered, not a sports car but it goes surprisingly well. Over the years I've toured Europe in it getting as far as Switzerland, Italy and Spain - it always held it's own at higher European speeds even when fully laden and going up some steep motorway inclines. Touring economy about 44mpg (always higher octane fuel)

Whilst I've never had any problems with the 1.416v (120k miles)  and the 1.8T is a great engine(the fun choice) - On an older car the 1.6 8v is the engine that's likely to last the duration and you'll get close to 40 mpg
