Fitting a new "used" Instrument Cluster - Adjustment of Mileage possible to existing mileage?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

it appears my Car needs a new Instrument Cluster, at a cost of around £650 (even including a 45% goodwill from Skoda).

Have been looking around, and it would be considerably cheaper to buy a used part for around £100-£120 from another low mileage Superb and get it fitted. The only thing I am not 100% certain about is the mileage adjustment on the used Panel. Will my local VW Independent be able to adjust the mileage on the new Cluster to the one of my existing one?

On the one hand I think it should easily be doable, considering the amount of clocked cars around. On the other hand I read on this forum and on some other Websites that VCDS will only allow you to adjust Mileage on a Cluster once, and only when it has less then 100KM on it (i.e. a new one).

Anyone has any experience in this Area?

Thanks,

dsab

Hi

You can use a Used one, however you need to go to someone who has the correct tools.

The problem you might have, if your dash is dead and the immo data can't be read from the cluster will leave you at the mercy of the dealer with online connection to the factory.

I have changed several clusters and if the immo transfer works ok then the mileage can also be changed

Where are you located? and what is the problem with the cluster

Hello Eddie.

thanks for the Info. Much appreciated.

The Cluster itself is still working, but just displaying some strange behaviors. It's displaying a Green Warning light, usually relating to Kessy or the DSG Gearbox when the lights are switched on. Unfortunately I don't have either, and strangely enough the Green Light only shows up when I switch the lights on or set them to Auto. If the lights are set to off or Parking, then it is not illuminated. In addition to that at the same time I also get the left indicator Icon illuminated. Not as brightly as when the indicator is actually on, but clearly visible. Thirdly, when setting the Cruise Control it also illuminates the right Indicator light on the dash, again not as brightly as when the indicator is actually on, but clearly visible. Switching on the Fog light also brings up another brown light. So nothing major right now, but highly annoying at night. And of course there is always the worry of a impending complete failure.

BTW... is the only way to find out the correct part number to take out the Cluster to check? I know there are loads of different variations of the cluster (Patrol/Diesel, LHD/RHD, MFD/No MFD etc.), so def. don't wanna buy the wrong one. :-) Mine is a 2012 1.6 Greenline SE with MFD.

Regards,

Daniel

Ok, checked the part catalogue, and it seems these are the two Units/Parts that would match my Car:

3T2920911H     combi-instrument; multi-function indicator; MPH; BXE; BLS; BMP; CBBB; CAYC; CLJA,CFFB; CFGB; PR-9Q1+U5B     1
3T2920941H     combi-instrument; display unit for maxi-check; package; MPH; BXE; BLS; BMP; CBBB; CAYC; CLJA,CFFB; CFGB; PR-9Q2+U5B     1

1) Does anybody know what the difference between multi-function indicator & display unit for maxi-check is?

2) I have seen that the Part number seems to change depending on manufacturing date of the Cluster, i.e. 3T2920911H, 3T2920911L, 3T2920911M. Is the letter just an indicator for it being a more up to date Version (like the Bluetooth modules), and still compatible?

you would want one that ends 941 so it is a maxidot

Eddie, one more question if possible.,

I checked with Skoda, and if I ordered a brand new Unit it would be a 3T2920941K. It looks like K is not the most current Version, as online I found a good few used 3T2920941M units for Sale, which I understand are newer. Should I stay with K or lower and not take a risk with a M version? Or would a M work just as well, in your opinion?

Mainly asking, as a K Version seems difficult to source online or via the usual breakers etc.

Thanks,

dsab

it depends on who you get to fit it

Dealer can only fit a NEW cluster (not a cluster fitted / coded to a car)

Specialist can fit used cluster, but if the cluster is too new it might not work with dash tool. I've had some issues with very new clusters

Hi Eddie

I'm italian owner Roomster and I 'm trying to swap the cluster with a used maxidot , the same built year, made in 2008.

When I tryed, the Immobilizer, doesn't start the engine (Immo active).

Do you think that enough to get and to try with a VAG Sw because by my VCDS it's impossible.

What do you think ?

Thanks a lot

Just to update the final outcome of this.

I managed locally to get a exact replacement (941K) of my cluster for £100, and my local VW specialist fitted and coded it to my car for £50. He was able to put the mileage of the new Cluster pretty close to the existing mileage (i.e. within 50mls), so happy enough with that. £150 is much better then the cost quoted me, even incl. a 45% goodwill contribution.

wouldnt the mileage be stored in the ECU?

Not on VAG cars - it's stored in the instrument cluster. The engine ECU stores speed/time information that can be used to estimate the mileage the car has covered if you have a diagnostic tool that can access the data. VCDS can do it for EDC 15 and EDC 16 controllers but not the EDC 17 controllers fitted to more recent cars.
