How to get that nice "thump" back when you shut doors?

Featured Replies

As the car is getting older I've been noticing it sounds a little bit "tinny" when you shut the doors and central locking, maybe it's just me being over picky?

It just doesn't seem to have that nice thump sound about it anymore, I have sprayed PTF onto locks/hinges/handles as best I can to no avail, any tips on how to get that sound back again?

Hopefully not just me thinking this!!

Nope! My (3 years old with 50k on the clock) Greenline Estate, still has the 'Sounds like a golf' 'THUNK' when you shut the doors!!

The boot lid however has developed a 'creak' which I think is just cos it's gummed up with crud and it's cold out there!!!

Haha, I didn't want to mention the "Sound like a G^^^" but that's what I meant!

I have a creak too, think it just needs a little lube on the hydraulic boot lift arms when I get 5 minutes?

Careful what type of lubricant you put on the gas lifts! Some cause the seals to loose their 'seal' ( :D ) and the boot lid won't stay open anymore!!

I'm gonna wait till the crap weather is gone then give my baby all the TLC she deserves!!!

Thanks for the tip, I was just going to put some WD40 on a cloth and wipe the rods, would that be ok?

Is the creak not the top hinges and that pin?

ooo no no no... wd40 is a degreaser, mate of mine did that on his Focus hatch, the boot lid slammed down on his head... never stayed up after that!

I use white grease on hinges, struts, etc after seeing the dealer use it in routine maintenance. just a slither on the rods does the trick and I have never had a hatchback slam me on the cranium yet! it looks a bit tatty but you can let it evaporate a little (It never truly sets) And wipe off the surrounding area, leaving what you need.

I got nice solid door clunks but I also sourced some little plastic covers that sit over the door lock latch (The bit the door lock clunks on to, on the door jamb) That supposedly reduce noise a little, along with allowing you to add grease to them under the cover and prevent corrosion. They do look better with the covers anyway and corroded ones (As seen on many older cars) Look a darn sight worse.  If you look at the boot latch, there is a plastic cover over the lock on the hatchback bit. They are similar to this.

My pet hate is white grease. I refused to use it in the dealer. Once it dries it looks a god awful mess and actually does naff all for the hinges. We got told to use it back in the day so the customer can see we have done something.

What do you prefer to use Ross?

I like ACF50, it's an anti-corrosion formula that clings and creeps well, and works great as a light lubricant :)

Mine creaks and it is the hinges at the top

A quick spray with a PTFE based lubricant soon see's it off again.

Stuff ive used on bikes for a few years now and its brilliant stuff.

Didnt realise it had lubricating properties though!
