booming noise when opening window

Featured Replies

I don't know if anyone else has had the same but whilst driving my Octy VRs at speed (legal) I opened the rear door window (hit the wrong button) and noticed a loud booming (like an excessive bass sound) that became more uncomfortable the more the back window opened but decreased when I opened the front. Would be a bugger if rear passengers wanted window open.

Yea, they all do it - It can be solved by opening the front window a crack op opening the sunroof (if fitted)

This happened on my Dad's Fabia too. If you lowered the back window it sounded like a sonic boom. Guess it's just something to do with the shape of Skoda's.

it's happened on nearly every car I've owned ...ford, peugeot, rover, you name it it did it .....just open the front a bit and it stops

I don't really know the science behind it but I reckon it's something to do with pressure with only having one window open...I guess air coming in and out of the same opening.......having 2 windows open probably equalises it?

That's normal.

What I think happens is the impact of the air hitting the rear and the sound waves bounce back forward giving you that ear-itching tremolo bass sound. Opening the front windows kills it.

Gets worse with both back windows open.........

And worse again if you drive an estate, as the cover flap thing "whoops" too adding to the effect :D

Great fun above 70 lol........

my kids used to adjust the rear windows just to see how loud they could make it....the little b********

I think its because the air which the car is slicing through as its driving usually curves back towards the car at about a ponit near the rear window, or just beyond, and the variance in pressure between the fast moving air and the still air inside the car causes some of the air to try and enter the car in a pulsing manner, making the booming.

Opening the front window too causes the air inside the car to move more because its got another point of entry, thus balancing the pressure between the 2 "zones".

Only a guess

It's all a load of harmonics, really.

Yes, compresion and standing waves etc. Raising or lowering the window just sufficient to over come the synchronisation does the job

*grin* that's what the lock-windows button's for! :)
