Oil for High Mileage Engines?

Featured Replies

Anyone using the oil advertised for high mileage engines?

My 170 diesel has past 207,000 and beginning to sound more rattly after cold start up than when fully warm. I plan to start doing the minor services myself and change the oil at half the recommended service interval. I'll be looking for an oil that is suitable for DPF and has long life still but noticed a few advertised for high mileage engines.

No need for the 'Long Life' is there if you intend doing Frequent Oil & Filter changes?

I'll look at the mileage specs carefully but the 'long life' oil I saw coming out of my last car was much thinner coming out than when it was going in! I think the high mileage interval is probably pushing it in favour of dropping fleet maintenance costs? After all I'm guessing the design life for the car/engine when coming up with service intervals is more like 100k miles rather than the 250k - 300k miles I'm aiming for!

From a brief look around the high mileage oils might look to be focused on seal and rubber conditioners. I may be better off with moving to a slightly thicker oil if the increased service intervals doesn't help.

Does anyone use oil additives any more? I remember my Dad swearing by Slick 50 20 odd years ago!

Just use the Recommended Oil for the Engine and forget using 'Long Life'.

Unless you have had it from new or have all the Invoices for the Oil used, it is likely to have just had Oil.

My Dad used to use Slick 50, but then he also smoked and had a drink now and again,

so what dads did was not always right.

He also changed Oil every 3,000 miles in a Diesel because that is what you used to do with Multigrade.

Things move on, good Oil is even Sold as Own Brand in Asda, Tesco, Morrison, Lidl etc.

Comma Oils are good as well.

Premium Brands and Additives are not necessary.  IMO.

I've got full service history. VAG Long Life 3 Bulk oil used each time. Seen other post saying I just need the oil to reach the VW507 standard. I'll try the regular changes and see if that sorts things out.

As long as it meets the Vag spec and you are doing regular changes what's the point in long life. ? Like you ,I believe was to keep the lease companies happy with longer service intervals IMHO
