Oil in coolant

Hi guys, had my 09 Octavia VRS LE tdi for a couple of months and serviced it myself a few weeks ago. Yesturday I had the coolant light flash up so checked the coolant only to find what I can only describe as greyish sloppy water.

I read up to see what it could be and my research has led me to believe it's the oil cooler failing but I'm just wondering if it could be anything linked with the service or am i just panicking? Everything went okay when I did the service and it runs fine, just the coolant light flashed up

I had the same problem on a mk 2 Passat 1.6 td, oil cooler was £30 exchange from a VW dealer,biggest problem is cleaning the oil sludge from the rad and pipes.I tried loads of cleaners and ending up using a pint of traffic film remover mixed with water, a ten mile run and a good flush cured it.

So it shouldn't be anything to do with the service then? Just can't understand why after 57k miles the oil coolers fooked :s Cheers guys

Those pictures above were at less than 50,000 miles.

I have ordered the new part from the dealer today and it was £235.46 (ouch) for the cooler and seals.....I thought I found one for £65 on eBay but turns out in was the gearbox oil cooler not the engine oil cooler. Does that sound about the right price?

Yes this was a few years ago but a jump from £80 to £235 is huge.

 

The main difference being I didn't ask the dealer, knowing it would be stupidly expensive. The £80 was for a non-genuine (but German manufactured) oil cooler sourced myself.

Try Euro car parts or GSF,I am sure they could do a better price.

Cheers guys!! £79 for cooler and seals, ordered yesturday at 2pm and arrived this morning

After replacing the oil cooler you should also replace the temperature thermostat.

better thing you should also get rid of the oil cooler. Skoda changed this design in facelift models by adding an oil sump with fins for air cooling. The oil filter should be mounted directly with engine by changing the oil filter screw to a shorter one as in facelift engine. Then connect the water tubes that was feeding the oil cooler together. Just look at an Octavia facelift engine and you will know how skoda made the modification. The oil cooler is useless.

The face-lift cars have entirely different engines.
