Cleaning wiper blades

Featured Replies

Today I decided to all 3 wipers blades on both my cars. I used methylated spirits on paper towel (kitchen roll) and can see a big improvement on both cars.

I'd read that you should keep cleaning until no more dirt/grease comes off but after cleaning each blade several times, the paper towels were still taking off black stuff. Am I doing something wrong?

Methylated spirits is a solvent , so its eating your blade! next time just wipe with damp kitchen roll

Water won't remove grease though, will it?

The video suggests only doing it two or three times, even he still had black coming off. That black is the surface of the blade rubber being eaten away by the meths, the idea is to use it to remove the dirt and then stop.

You would not like to be stuck in a lift with him.

Damp not wet, its the kitchen roll that removes the grease , use a quality one like plenty

I take the blades off and clean using a old toothbrush and fairy liquid, job done.

I watch his channel regularly, don't knkw what it is but I enjoy watching it

++ for white spirit vinegar

I replace my blades twice a year in march and October..Not bad at £22 for a set of Bosch when there's a deal on..

I normally coat the screen with Rain-X & the spray some on the cloth & score along the wiper blade never had a issue :notme:

Vinegar and rain x if you've got it. Vinegar is a lot cheaper. I've also picked up some genuine vag windscreen polish which eases the friction on the blades particularly after cleaning.

Ive tried rain-x, find it causes a lot of wiper blade dragging after a couple of weeks.

So instead, i use one of the Heavy Duty hand wipes we have for work to clean the glass then the blade. Then a small dib of vaseline of the hingey bits of the wiper blade frame to stop them sticking.

Works fine...
