I went for an opteron coz its the same price as the equiv A64...

it has 1mb cache compared to 512k on a venice

they overclock like buggery! get a decent stepping and you can see over 3gig on air cooling! im on 2.7 at mo, and ive not had a chance to tweek, the memory is holding it back... i just whacked the cpu fsb up and here i am...

I did a similar upgrade a few months back, but had to get a 148 because the 146 were out of stock. Runs at 3.1Ghz now (on water). Also stuck a 7800GT in.

Playing GTR again now is incredible after my P4 and 9800pro.

Haven't bothered with any other games recently.

Yes them there opteron 146's are legendary overclockers

Me too!

Like the look of the Opterons -- but nobody has them, course I could buy from Ebay -- you now the thing "Buy this Opteron - it'll do 3Ghz - but I've never done it honest guv - it's still in da box init":rolleyes:

So now I think I'll go x2 as well -- but may have to wait a while - they are still a little pricey,and if your going to build a PC with one of them thar chips in, you need some pretty good stuff to go with as well.
