HUD Display

Featured Replies

I've just bought a similar one with just a bit different design (same unit as e.g.: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Car-HUD-Head-Up-OBD2-II-Speedometer-Display-Projector-Speeding-Warning/281776542745?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140122125356%26meid%3Dc97bdbc4852a49cb94328ef5e75a8f57%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D3%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D191744691873), but I had no time so far to properly install it; just had a promising short test-drive. Responsiveness is ok, all looks fine in general, but gives poor & double reflection if you use no special film on the windshield (included fortunately). One more thing to keep in mind - it goes off with auto start/stop and needs to boot-up after the engine is on again.

Now I'm improving it to boost the contrast (optical filter film on the unit to minimize sun reflection from inactive LED cells) and get a perfect alignment (I'll go with additional acrylic projection plate to eliminate the problem). All is ordered and I'm waiting only for the projection element.

I'll post a proper review once I'm done.

Can't see the point personally, wouldn't it just cause you to be distracted from the road?

I suppose that price isn't too bad though if you wanted to try one for a bit.

I'd like to try a cheap(ish) HUD that only displays speed and doesn't clutter the windscreen with everything else. The only ones I've seen are really expensive. Has anybody seen anything like this? Or maybe someone can tell from their experience that the clutter can be switched off.

I chose the one from above link to have a display of speed, rpm, consumption and maybe temp.

There is no problem in masking the unwanted parts if you like to do so. Easy and clean. It would probably look like (the reflection is false of course;):

I have seen this one on eBay that does not connect to OBD and only used GPS for information to be displayed, even less expensive than the one in my first post.

I've not tried these cheap ones but I've driven a few BMWs with HUD & it was excellent.

In normal driving it displays only the digital vehicle speed but will also highlight traffic signs (speed limits for exmaple), gear shift recommendations & shows navigation directions when you have a route active.

I found it instantly comfortable to use & great because you dont need to look down at the dials or even further down at the navigation unit.

They are located in a position which doesn't distract from the normal view & is automatically adapted for low or high light levels.

I will be getting this as an option on my next car if available...

I'm not sure how common my recent experience of this is, but a few weeks ago I was blinded by a bright light coming from the drivers position of an oncoming Peugeot 3008. I initially thought the driver had shone a torch or something similar at me. It was only when I looked at my dashcam footage that I saw that sunlight had been refracted from the HUD display directly at me.

Not in the slightest.  I have HuD in my 3 series and it is fantastic, lots of tie ins with the nav, speed limit display, ACC, media, phone.  Hardly ever take my eyes off the road to look at the dials, no need to just a quick focus shift to look at the HuD.

Not sure whether these cheap implementations would be that good though...
