Power Steering Pump

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Having a bit of a nightmare with my Fabia at the moment! I spent the weekend replacing the rear discs, pads and adjusting the handbrake in order to take it back to the MOT tester for a re-test (it failed on rear handbrake efficiency last week). Just my luck - the power steering gave up the ghost en route to the MOT! In all honesty the power steering had intermittently cut in and out a few times recently, but I couldn't believe the timing!

I've taken the car to an independent VW specialist who has diagnosed a faulty power steering pump and quoted over £900 for replacing it (the new pump from Skoda is around £700 alone!).

Now, I'm looking for a more sensible solution - most likely a refurbished unit or secondhand. But if I can find a new one for a good price then this is the most desirable option.

Can anyone suggest a decent supplier for such a pump?

Also I have read on here that there may actually be two different pumps (and a quick look on eurocarparts suggests this is the case). Is there a quick way to tell what type of pump I need? My car is a Y reg, 2001 Tdi Estate if that helps!

There are Koyo or TRW pumps. The TRW ones have TRW written on the fluid cap...

Thanks for the reply - I've asked the mechanic to check for me tomorrow first thing.

Are these pumps interchangeable?

Here's another way to check - the shape of the little dipstick.

Not sure if they are interchangeable but I know that Koyo ones aren't as good as TRW.

Cheers, that is helpful indeed. Unfortunately I don't have the car with me but hopefully the mechanic can inform me of the type I need.

Looking online I can't even find a supplier for the Koyo pump, and eurocarparts have two TRW pumps at different prices with different part numbers. Confusing!

Most Fabias have TRW pumps. I'd be surprised if yours was a Koyo but you never know.

Of the two on ECP that come up for your car, the TRW one is made by TRW, the other is a copy made by 'Remy'.  They are probably functionally identical, but I've never heard of Remy. That doesn't mean it won't work, it's going to come with a year's warranty I'd imagine.  Before you spend anything though...

If I were you - unless you trust them 100% not to take the pee - I'd probe a little deeper into why the garage have concluded that the pump is duff, ideally getting someone (from Briskoda) local to you with VCDS to scan the car and see what it thinks the problem is.  I'm not saying they're crooks, but just for example, a friend of mine was told that his Polo's ABS light meant a new ABS module at £600 was required, and what we discovered it really needed was a new fuse...

Have you got a constantly lit 'steering wheel' yellow warning light signifying a PAS problem? Does your battery light come on with ignition and go off when the engine starts? Do you have a multimeter to check battery/charging voltages? Does the car do a lot of short journeys, and not many longer ones?

They are probably functionally identical, but I've never heard of Remy.

I think they used to be known as Delco Remy and possibly AC Delco and have something to do with Vauxhall?

They are not interchargeable unless you also change the rack and sensor.

regarding the topic, just find out the one you have and buy one on ebay for less than 50£

regarding the two trw pumps with different part numbers, I think, not sure, that TRW made a replament for koyo pumps (JER112)

There are several problems that could cause steering power assist to fail, the most expensive may be the pump itself, hence the quote.

I would be suspicious of any garage that suggests changing the pump before changing the fuse, the angle sensor and checking the wiring.

When mine went last summer, I bought a 2nd hand angle sensor for £40 and fitted it myself. If you can change rear discs you can certainly change the fuse and angle sensor and check the wiring with a voltmeter.

Try westernpowersteering.co.uk near Bristol. Did me a steering rack for £150 with 2 year warranty. Skoda wanted £600. They do pumps as well.

I have changed a few pumps and it is a simple enough job.

I would advise you to get a copy of VCDS so that you can read the status of the pump ECU, hopefully this will narrow down if you need a sensor or a pump.

Both GSF and Eurocar parts do recon pumps at a fraction of the dealer price.
