Newbie - fault codes

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 2003 Vrs and it's been a bit hesitant so scanned the codes with a generic scanner.

Got the following:

P0351

P0352

P0353

P0354

P1296.

I'm guessing the 351,352,353 and 354 are coil pack issues, I read theses cars are renowned for them

But P1296 I see is cooling system malfunction, any ideas where to start?

Cheers mate

Car never gets up to 90, but I only got it yesterday so not driven it much, seems the heat does fluctuate a bit but heater is good and toasty.

I'll try to change cts first

Thermostat might be stuck open if it never gets up to 90 - that was the symptom on mine before I replaced the thermostat. Not sure if I had the p1296 code before replacement though.

If you replace the CTS the advice on here is to go for a genuine one as people have reported problems with non-genuine ones. I used a Gates thermostat (1/3 the price of genuine) and it has been fine for over a year now.

Ive seen a green on on GSF website with a 40% discount this weekend so brings it down to £19.20

Might start with that as I hear the stat can be a pain in the arse

Its a bit of a fiddle if you've not deleted any pipework but it's doable with extensions an elbow joint and some patience. Just get as much moved out the way from round the dipstick as possible. Any non gen stat is a gamble and stay well away from non gen cts, even gen stats are a bit of a lottery.

Genuine CTS only. I wouldn't buy anything from GSF, I've had too may bad experiences with their VAG parts.

Some later Octy's have a mapped cooling system, which has a sensor operated stat & a CTS. If your car is pre 2003 it should just have CTS.

Mine is a 2003 on a 53.

I have contacted my local dealer to enquire about the Coilpacks recall so can get the genuine cts at the same time.

Although I will have a good look tomorrow as I have cleared the codes but not looked at the car, for all I know the cts may have been swapped already. I haven't had any cel lights come on
