if its like the leon cupra (which it is) its iinfront of the drivers side front wheel , its small and gets no airflow ,

i wonder if it might be worth placing a duct in the side of the bumper and channeling air to the intercooler?

thoughts anyone?

Some members - me included - have fitted a vent to the wheel arch liner to improve the airflow through the intercooler.

in my estimation tho u can only vent out wat u vent in , FMIC all the way , plus because of the plastic end tanks on the standard unit u cant use IC spray kits

the Octy vRS IC is fed air through the front grille on the drivers side of the bumper, the standard grille on this side has holes cut in the honey comb design.

you can get Millotec grilles which are poader coated stainless steel grilles that allow maximum airflow. you can clearly see the IC with this grille on so i have no doubt that enough air is reaching mine, i am also of the opinion that without venting the air from the back of the IC any warm air that gets pushed behind will ultimately bleed back into the intake air to the TB so have a grille / vent to fit to mine arch liner to aid this air flow through the IC.

looking at the Leon bumper on both the Cupra and Cupra R neither have a simular bumper grille design to the vRS, i hear quite a few Leon owners take out a fog light to aid the air flow !?

yes on the leon the airways to the intercooler are not ideal but on the octy it is already channeled delivering cool air to the intercooler...the work on the wheel arch liner is to the 'vent' and thus create more through draft... however this still does not stop the intercooler from being small and relative ineficent..ezpacially if you have remapped your car

I think its safe to say that everyones opinion is that the Octy IC doesn't get as much air as it could. Maybe the IC could have been moved forward to get a better flow rate closer to it.

Got talking to a guy in West Yorks who heavily mods VW's and he has done a FMIC on a more wallet friendly basis.

He has used 3 Audi TT 225 intercoolers, knocked the plastic end caps off and then ally welded them all together, then had a couple of ally end caps fabricated and mounted it on his Golf. He said they have made a major difference to the car, especially with pick up and low end torque.

I thought I'd give it a go for what it's going to cost, as I know some one who can fabricate in ally, which is half the battle. Got 2 IC's, just need 1 more.

Mounting should be no problem, so its just the piping that might need some work from the old brain cell:confused:

Has anyone tried this? or mounted one either side?

Sounds like a good plan. A shop-bought front mounted intercooler seems very expensive.

Incidentally, what sort of torque/degC difference does reducing the inlet temperature make to a 1.8T? Does front mounting have a significant effect on inlet temp?

a shop brought one is expansive but worth the money i did alot of research into intercoolers and tricks other people did and how they worked even brought one big volvo FMIC from ebay for a tenner with the idea of fitting myself...at the end of the day...you end up spending a lot of time and just about as much money re inventing the wheel... seriously you might as well bite the bullet and cough up like i did for a manufactured one... i went for the ARB FMIC one of the cheapest out a cracking bit of kit... noticeable diffrence is boost stays for longer through the rev range... only realy noticeable with a gauage...
