8k miles a year Diesel or petrol?

Featured Replies

Looking at buying a mk111 octavia vrs diesel but only do around 8/9k miles a year.

Mixed driving to work, motorways and normal 30mph roads.

Just wondering is it worth getting a diesel with me only doing this amount of milage?

Thanks

At 8k a year it's got to be a petrol.

I do less than 5K a year and I have a diesel, no problems at all

I'm not saying that running a diesel at 8k a year is going to cause a problem, except from the DPF regenerating a lot, but economically it makes more sense to run a petrol with that sort of mileage.

At 30k+ a year I run a diesel, at 4k a year the wife runs a petrol.

At 8k a year I'd buy a petrol but it does depend on the type of driving involved

Another major factor is purchase price and future re-sale prices

Always had petrol in the past and always said I wouldn't buy an oilburner.

But we have started camping and will be travelling a bit more so milage will probably rise a little.

Might save me a few quid each month?

There will be little difference financially between them, diesel will cost more initially, but will be cheaper to run and will hold it’s value better, petrol will potentially be quieter (although some vRS petrols ‘rattle their heads off’ making them sound worse than a diesel) and will be cheaper to buy.

Drive them both and buy whichever you prefer.

If you calculate all of your motoring costs to the 'nth degree, then do the research, run the numbers & make a finance-based decision.

If, however you enjoy driving (& you have owned a Sirocco R?) then drive both, & let your heart decide.

It's not just about the money!

There used to be a noticeable difference between the low down shove the diesel engine gave compared to the petrol one but with the 220VRS it's very similar but the petrol pulls and revs much higher.

Some people report low 40 mpg with the diesel and high 30 with the petrol so fuel costs are almost identical.

The petrol purchase price is lower, is more fun and with the hate campaign the government is waging against diesel you're probably better with the petrol.

My self I miss the low down shove of the diesel but even my humble 1.4tsi pulls reasonably from 1500rpm but the bit I love is the extra "zing" further up parts of the rev counter my diesel couldn't even contemplate

I'm loving petrol again and i'm considering the latest revision of the EA888 next with it's dual port/direct injection in what I buy next. Shouldn't be prone to valve carboning and should escape the dreaded GPF (euro 6c 2017) - Also seems to be some "reasonable" reports of economy on this forum

However for now I'll stick to the humble 1.4tsi Superb (still does 127mph  )

It's hard to compare fuel economy as different driving styles/ journey types can greatly affect figures. However I've found my 2014 Superb II 1.4tsi to be only 3 - 4mpg worse than my beloved old 2003 Superb I 1.9pd on the same driving style (mine!) and journeys (my commute)

Petrol gets my vote.

I went from a 200+diesel to my 75hp citigo... ignoring 95% of the luxo/power differences, petrol is just easier and a little more fun to leave it in gear :)

The gains we saw in diesel engines from the 90's where a 'powerful' diesel was 90hp to the crazy world we have now, is coming to petrol. Petrol essentially lost a decade, we can begin to see that now in the crazy 1.4tsi blocks.

At 8k, even 20k I'd stick with petrol, less need to find a glove on fill ups too :)
