Dogbone bush insert = Torture device?

Featured Replies

Since getting my car I have always had an issue with the cabin drone being excessive at idle or when creeping in traffic to the point it was driving me crazy, I've tried several fixes so far replacing bits and bobs to no avail. Yesterday  whilst working under the car I noticed that the previous owner (or the one prior to him) had at some point installed a bush insert. It took nearly an hour to get it out between myself and a friend as I don't think any rubber grease had been put on when it was installed and now the car is transformed! No noise, at a stop its almost like the engine isn't even running and there's no noticeable slop in the way the car drives with the bush out.

This leads me to my point about why would anyone ever install and leave this in on a daily driver? The drone/resonance was driving me mad and I'm not sure I could see any benefit of having it tbh.

Ironically I have a brand new one which I was planning to install as a last ditch attempt to sort the droning but can now thankfully return it.

I never noticed any extra noise or anything when I used to have one, is yours a tdi or tfsi, my old one was tfsi petrol, and like I say saw no difference after install vibration/droning wise

Mines the tsi, the difference is literally night and day.

I had one of the Powerflex ones on my old Seat Leon 1.8T. It was horrible. Until someone pointed out that there are actually notes in the workshop manual about how much force you should apply to the bolts while reattaching the dog mount. So I took it off, reinstalled woth proper torque wrench set to whatever it was supposed to be and problem solved. Drove like a dream.

I think it depends on what duro bush you get.

I helped a mate install one in his vRS TFSI and he was back within a month as he couldn't stand the vibrations at idle when in traffic.

Removal of the insert meant that half of it was demolished.  Being a tight-arse, I used the half that wasn't demolished in my own car.  I had about 70,000km at that point so the original dogbone was probably flexing a bit.  The half-insert proved to be fantastic and didn't affect NVH at all.    It was so good that I've seriously considered filling the remainder of the void with something like silicone sealant but I figured it would just crumble after a few months.

Maybe mine was incorrectly torqued when the clutch and dmf were changed last year (with the previous owner) or something. Silicone would be super soft so doubt you'd notice much of a change.

Yeah with a silicone dog bone mounting you will notice the difference.
