Is this an original Ross-Tech?

Featured Replies

I'd like to see the paperwork that came with that order when it was new, ie where it was bought from.  My VCDS has a silver serial number on the other side of that backshell, and maybe it was that number that RossTech needed me to quote before I could get reg'd as a verified VCDS owner.

It is permitted to sell these things on by the way, so that aspect of this sale is okay.

As an example, my genuine VCDS has "VCDS HEX-USB+CAN" on a label on one side and its serial number and the resellars sticker on the other side.

Check the RossTech site and see if that version - I can't make out which variant of VCDS it is, is right for what you want to use it on.

I've checked two resellars websites, and while they both refer to it as "VCDS HEX-USB+CAN"  the labelling on the latest pictures are for "VCDS HEX+CAN" like the one on that advert, so it should be okay.

Bear in mind if that cable has already been registered with ross tech you would need to pay about £60 to get support, so not really any cheaper than buying brand new.

That's not a genuine Ross tech cable.

It looks a lot like mine (sourced from Ilexa) only that's got the case with it,  Mine didn't come with a case.

That's not a genuine Ross tech cable.

Having looked at it on my laptop I agree, the serial  number is missing (should be on the line that says "Rev B").  Also the pattern of spots is different to mine, it has philips screws rather than torx holding it together and the end of the OBDII socket should have a built in clip bit.

Like I suggested, ask the seller for some form of provenance, like the original resellers sales receipt - and a serial number.

Generally, I'd be willing to consider that as time moves on, RossTech will change the "look" of their product without needing to justify that, as well as there probably being more than one manufacturer of that item world wide.  For instance, my quite a few years old, supplied by Ilexa VCDS dongle has a completely different look including the stickers, to the ones currently shown on Ilexa and Gendan website.

Interesting to hear that effectively, RossTech charge £60 for re-assigning the product to a new owner - and why not!

It looks exactly the same as the clone 12.12 cables you can buy on Aliexpress for £12.

Every genuine cable I've seen also has a RossTech velcro cable tie, whereas the clones don't

That was my gut feeling from my first inspection of the picture, no Velcro cable wrap.

I also think RT use Torx screws and not Phillips, the above picture shows that comparison.

My RT cable has Torx.
