Cooper S (2003) vs Golf GTi

Featured Replies

So the copen has moved on but I'm hankering after a small performance car again. Budget up to 5k potentially. I really fancy a cooper S but also like the golf. I guess different classes but what would you go for? Any previous experience with the cooper S supercharged version? Also thinking it might be worth finding one with the JCW kit fitted but I don't know..

Any other cars I should look at? The cheaper the better as then I can mod haha!

I had a mate with an early supercharged mini. He said it was great to drive but the fuel consumption was biblical for a 1.6

How about a VW POLO GTI 1.8 T, 3 or 5 door ?

And BossFox (Richard) has a full APR turbo upgrade kit on sale for £1000, would put your Polo GTI at around 300bhp!!

If size isn't an issue I think the Cooper S would be more fun - the supercharger is supposedly very addictive.

If its not the John cooper version then I'd defiantly go for the golf, every time I see a cooper s I always expect to see a woman driving it.

I was tempted by a 2005 Cooper S back in 2011 - think it was for sale at £9,500 - the "woman's car" thing and 'Cooper S' above the sills put me off - I still see it around (driven by, er, a woman) - stayed with Skoda and bought the MKII vRS (which I still have).

Drove a JCW cooperS once . About a 2003 age, but i drove it in 2006, in jacksonville. Mega fun, it had the "whiptastic" iirc steering quick rack which made chuckin it around quite fun.

Drove a supercharged cooper s too that a college friend had (he was being paid to be in college doing marine navigation) Very easy get yourself in a lot of trouble in it.. i was doing 95 down the dual carriage way and it felt like 60... not helped by the feckin speedo waay over to the left! I would agree with the thirstiness...
