nearside passenger door wont open

Featured Replies

hi I have a 53 plate Octavia estate and nearside passenger door wont open hence an mot fail, does anyone know how to rectify this problem? cheers.

I would guess it has a wiring problem with the door loom or the lock

you will need to get the door card off and get to investigate

I guessing it is a mk 1 as it is a 53 plate. If so I suggest you take a browse in the Mk 1 forum as this is a common problem.

You will find many suggestions such tearing out the door card and cutting the nylon around the deadlock to be able to turn the motor with a screwdriver.

It is just possible to take off the door card even when locked. Look at the bottom of the door and try to take out the 3 or 4 screws you can see. Taking out the rear seat squab helps access. Take off the door handle etc then pull the card up and out to release it by the window at the door hinge end.

I have always been able to get a door unlocked by spraying a lubricant such a GT85 over the entire lock mechanism from inside the door. Leave it for 20 minutes or so then use the remote key to lock and unlock the door whilst giving it a thump on the door by the lock. You need to do this many times and perhaps leave it overnight before trying again.

Once open, spray lubricant through the holes in the door around the lock from the outside, and take the door card off fully to spray again on the inside. You will see some parts will be dry and corroded white from water.

There are many photos in the Mk1 forum. If the search button is unsuccessful, then Google is your friend using the search term: Briskoda Skoda Mk1/ your search item.

Both my rear doors had intermittent unlocking until I sprayed the locks as above. Several years later they still worked as intended.

I misread your post as referring to the rear passenger door. For the front passenger door everything still applies except for access. You may be able to get at the screws at the bottom. The lock side of the door card is held in place by nylon clips which in turn have screws going in them. Others have said that you can just about lever away the door card on that side but you may have to replace some of the clips (not expensive). Not tried it myself as I was always able to open the door with persistent remote key presses.

would putting it on a diagnostic system possibly show where the fault is? We have tried going in through the door handle outside and banging it so could the fault be in the drivers door?

Yes to both questions. Did you confirm that your car is a Mk 1 Octavia, as I suspect from your registration.

If so, this is a common problem and there is much information on the Mk1 forum.

In fact there is thread running at the moment which almost the same as your situation. Take a look at:

My driver door plug and socket were the same as those shown in the photos but did not impact on the passenger door.
