Automotive Engineering Internship, any ideas

Featured Replies

My daughter is doing an Automotive Engineering Degree, and starts her BA Year next year.

She was looking for an Internship for this Year, sort of Summer/inter term kind of thing, and after a visit, was really impressed with Ricardo's Midlands Technical Centre in Leamington.  So impressed was she that she has decided she would possibly like to do something along those lines, rather than working for a vehicle manufacturer, which was her original aim.

Ricardo obviously get loads of applications and the sifting of applications was put back a month, so she is hoping to be informed about this by the end of March.  I am trying to help her find other companies in a similar field to send enquiries to, and hence my post today.

If anyone can think of similar companies to Ricardo, and deal with designing, testing and manufacturing High Performance and Motorsport Car parts, I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Lennie

Quaife, I think are a similar company. They specialize in transmission I think.

She would be worth looking into actual racing teams/companies as well. They often look for people who are interested in the automotive engineering. RML and Prodrive that cover a vast array of disiplines would offer a wealth of knowledge and experience. It doesn't have to be as part of a pit crew or anything either, the engineering support is a major role now as I'm sure you'll know/understand.

If she wants to get into racing teams etc, she would be best to start trying now. Any experience is valuable (as you know or you wouldn't be asking :notme: ). If, however, I have read to much into it, just ignore me haha.

Good luck to your daughter!

No that's great thanks. It's like, you hear of companies stuff, like dark side for instance, or forge, or quaife, but if you don't know them, then you don't consider them. Quaife I thought was a diff place, no idea they did anything else. Turns out forge make their own stuff too, but more leaning a bit more towards consumer related stuff.

All ideas are welcome!

Thanks

Have you thought about McLaren, they have the race team and the car factory, based in Woking and expanding. It's a fascinating place inside, not had a tour round but was fortunate to do some work in there a couple of years ago. The race team and car production place are alongside each other.

Yeah she's tried to apply to McLaren and Williams, but they only accept applications through their website in a certain format at a certain time of year, and not realising that she missed them this year. Will check other teams though now that I think of it see if they have anything.

Cheers and thanks.

It really depends on what she wants to go into. There is a lot of automotive manufacturing companies in the UK. What sort of sector is she interested in?

She really wanted to get into the design side, not actually drawing the car as such, but taking a designers mental idea and turning it into something that would actually function.

Her favourite car is still the original Audi R8, with the 458 coming a close second for a time until the P1 and the 918 came out. She really likes the new Jags, well maybe not the f pace as much, but one of the reasons she picked Warwick University was its close ties with JLR who she would love to work with.

Anyway, after seeing Ricardo's place it gave her other ideas. One off parts development for specific functions or outcomes when someone wants a car to be able to do a certain thing, and it is designed, jigged, tested, refined and manufactured immediately, rather than when the next model comes out in 5 years kind of thing. I think she liked that fact they don't just do one thing and it's immediacy. That's is why I suggested the F1 teams engineering departments to her when she mentioned it, but they get so many applications they only accept them during a certain time of year, which is their way of managing the influx of internship applications.

Thanks for the reply.

Well worth looking into Jaguar Landrover. Numerous jobs and placements around many sites.

So she needs to be looking to speaking to vehiclee manufacturers directly or tier 1 suppliers.

There is a lot of tier 1 manufacturers / designers and builders in the UK.

I can think of a few companies off the top of my head if your interested PM me

Yeah I know she has applied there in the past through a different programme specially aimed at getting girls involved in JLR, but was unsuccessful. She is going to apply through their regular internship programme for next summer.

Thanks

I still have a lot of contacts in both Gaydon and Whitley, if you need any help I can always ask.

I'll tell you what though, I slagged my brother off for going to Uni to be a Gym Teacher(he loves it when I call him that), but by Christ her Engineering Course isn't half a lot of work. I thought, big school for 10 weeks, then 5 weeks hols, rinse and repeat, but every term break she fills the car or van with books and whatnot for home and studies the whole time she is here.

I can't even successfully list the boys old toys on Gumtree without a break for fallout 4!

Hats to the engineer students who actually want a qualification, they work bloody hard for it.

Jeez Tech1e that would be immense.

Just even if there was so someone she could contact, or email. She wants to able to show someone what she can do rather than just send in an application. If she could send a sample of the type the work she has done at Uni and even at school, she is confident she will get in once folk see what she can do.

One example, in 2013 she entered into a competition through the school to design a pump which performed a specific function. At the show, the test was different from what they had been told by her teacher it would be and her design failed. But she got up and did an off the cuff talk and q&a on how her design worked and why it didn't work in the test that day and ended up winning young Scottish engineer of the year at the big bang event.

So I'm confident she won't let anyone down if they give her a chance, mate.

Cheers

I'll PM you when I speak to her in the morning I am working late tonight so I can have the day off tomorrow. She goes to JLR every term for one thing or another and every year In think they set some of the BA and Masters Projects. The one I saw during her open day visits, was a new door strengthening beam for the chop top evoque. Made out of some carbon composite material and tested to destruction. Was very impressive.

Hats off to her choosing the hard path. It'll be worth the work in the end.

It's very easy to choose a light uni course just to get the qualification.

I forgot to put forward my suggestion of Lotus. They do a lot of development work for other car companies as well as building their own.
