Anybody fitted a shift light

Featured Replies

Has anybody fitted a shift light to their VRs, I've e-mailed a few places but finding one for a diesel is difficult.

I suppose a shift light looks pretty cool, but hardly necessary on a diseasel where max power is produced at about 4k rpm - hardly stratospheric revs and you soon know when you've reached it as the power tails off quick enough. I think a boost gauge would be more interesting due to the small power band of the TDI.

Thanks for your opinion, but I want a shift light not a boost gauge

Bit of a gimmick though innit.... you do after all, have a rev counter :D

I've got a shift light on mine but by the time you notice it, you've hit the limiter anyway.

The RX8 has a shift light and a "bing". The light comes on just before the "bing" sounds and when you're thrashing it round a track or on a nice B-Roas it is very useful.

I fitted one on my ITR that had a similar "flash before noise" method and it was useful there too.

Mine is hitting 5k before you know it, PP is at 4250 and 5000 is beyind safe.

This a joke? Yes ??? If not. GET A LIFE !!!

I found the shift light in the ITR a great help when on a blat - but at 9,000 rpm it may be a little different to a Fabia.

Thanks for your informed post, now can we stay on topic please.

Not fitted one myself, but dug up a few links:

I must admit it's quite possible that you could link it up to the rev counter, but a separate unit looks like a better plan.

The only catch I can see is that the revs are so low it may not be easy.

Alternatively, electronic shops may sell a rev counter that is built using LEDs. If that's the case you could replace the LED/LEDs at the revs you want a shift indicator to light up, and hide the other LEDs away. Might be a bit cheaper.

i can see the need for it too Craig tbh, its oh so easy to go past peak power and not realise but you are actually ragging your car for no reason. let me know if you decide to go for it, i'd be interested in seeing it

I'm really sorry!! I didnt think you were being serious:rofl:

I cant wait for 1/4/06:rofl:

My old XR3 had a shift light, how cool was it??

Why are you asking us? :P

Did it have neon lights on the bonnet too ??!!

On The Fabia Service Manual there is a shift light on the cover with lots of other idiot lights, I Asked the dealer but apparantley they don't exist!

I wouldn't fit one myself, but if you want one then go for it I say, your car so it's upto you.

You will have to keep us up todate with how yu get on.

I have a DRE shiftlight in the garage not sure it works though although it did on my CTR.

Basically its fully programmable sp you can set the revs at which the 5 lights come on.

I did a lot of track and 1/4 mile work in my CTR and found it very very useful!

Check out DRE's website as all it needs to connect is 12v+ 12v- and a rev counter feed from the ecu, not sure if it would work with a diesel though

I do think they are naff as well. But the car is now reving too high for my liking. A rev limiter would do but can't seem to do it with vag com

The car already has a rev limiter

If you insist, Jabba can lower/raise the limit to your requirements.

Well either the last map tweek removed it or it ain't working, before stopped around 4800 now peak power is close to 4400 and it'll easily rev beyond 5k but how far I'm not brave enough to try

the official rev limiter is 5200

you may have big problems getting one that is TDI suitable, as theres no coil to get the feed off.

Maybe thats why mine was so slow before, just need a quiet private road as it's going beyond 5000 in 5th and havn't been able to find a private road to try 6th. Got to 4800 in 6th but had to slow down for the cattle grid.
