brakes - didnt brake!

Featured Replies

Jumped in the car 100 meters came to a round about, brakes a slip sensation and nothing happened for a least 5 seconds, inc abs. I kept my foot down on the brakes and after 5 seconds they worked. It was worrying as i was approaching a very busy round about. Discs/ pads/ fluid 6 months old. I never had this happen before, what could be the cause ?

Air bubble?

Bleed brakes and see if it does it again.

Diesel on the road? I had this years ago. I'd noticed a couple of times that the abs seemed a little keen (read kept kicking in) and the approached a roundabout, braked and nothing happened. A few seconds later, the abs kicked in and the car stopped. Scary when it happens, but I assumed that all 4 wheels locked at the same time, so the car thinks it's stationary. (I know it was diesel in my case as shortly afterwards I came up behind the lorry which was unable to make it up a hill and quite obviously had a split in the tank)

I dont think it was something on the road. and the ABS didnt kick in,

It could be air, this has not happened in the 6 months past, since it was bled.

Servo pipe may have developed a leak?

Brake servo pipe if the pedal is firmer.

Brand pipe if the travel on the pedal is low (ie pressing down for five seconds untill it bites) could well have a burst pipe

Air in the system if it's spongy

Or a lining has fallen off a pad possibly and you've had to push the piston out to take up the space.

Had this on the work van once it was scary to say the least, ended up damaging the piston which meant the calliper needed replacing.

none of these, brakes felt normal in the pedal. Just nothing engaged.

 - This was a one off, and driven at least 50 miles since and no repeat.

Perhaps it was an airlock that eventually got pushed through?

Weird to say the least.

Have you actually checked out the brakes and had a good look at them before you start saying it's not this and that? If the brakes are fine on a visual check then how do you know if it wasn't the road conditions? You say the abs didn't work, so could it be a fault in the system?

If it's not the conditions of the road then it's clearly something wrong with the braking system.

ofc ive checked, road was dry without any noticeable spillage, i had passed the same route 15min prior also, how ever im not ruling out oil splash from engine/ or elephant mod. VCDS has given no errors.

So from whats said here, i recon either oil spill/ air in line.

Had ice on the discs before... That's similar feeling
