Gearbox woes

Featured Replies

Ok I'm pretty sure my gearbox on my 03 vRS is shot, get an awful speed increasing sound in first gear, I'm assuming a synchro or something similar.

Does anyone know if a box from the other VAG range will fit? Mk4 Golf 1.8t for example?

Try to find a vRS box £250

Mk4 box £100

Quite a difference lol

What sort of sound

Really hard to describe and even harder to record lol.

It's a sort of brrrrrrrrrrrrr sound as you accelerate in first, doesn't do it in any other gear, clutch bites good, no judder, all gear changes are spot on but just first gear, almost like something is rubbing.

Actually do you remember putting playing cards on the back wheel of a bmx to make it sound like a motorbike? It's like that lol

Ah right.  First gear does have a distinctive noise ive noticed but not one like sounding like that!

no noise on mine..... there is a "code " for the gearbox.... think it has a 2 in it lol.... cant remember off hand! but all with the right code fit (from different cars)  ...

EHA is the code for a vRS box. Box type is 02J. All 02J types will fit but ratios are different. You should be able to find one cheaper than £250. I had one up for sale at £70 a few weeks back. Check cars being broken in the classified on here.

Cheers guys

I have found a Mk4 Golf being broke near me, he wants £100 for the box.

I would rather keep an original in but i seem to be constantly spending money on it at the minute, only bought it a couple of weeks ago.

I will keep an eye on classifieds cheers

Just in case anyone stumbles across this searching for gearbox info.. - the 6 speed box codes are 02m and 02q.
