New owner with couple questions

Featured Replies

Hi. I have a 1.6 se+ diesel. There is mention of variable service and I see this on various threads but is this just down to the oil used? If so how do I know what's currently in the engine?

Is there anything else i should be aware of that makes the service every 2 years instead of one?

Second question: can I get a replacement sd card as mine didn't have one and want to update the maps if possible.

3rd question- should there be a light in the gear stick as the numbers appear very faint, not like worn off just very faint and a light up gear stick would have looked nice

I don't  think so.

Anyway - why do you need that? Do you really look at the gear stick when switching to another gear?

No it just seems pointless having the numbers so faint on there but if it was supposed to light up then I would like to have that feature back. No worries that's not really important though :)

Your diesel has a DPF (diesel particulate filter) so uses the same oil regardless of which service interval it is set to (Quantum 5W30 VW 507.00 long life / low ash).

The variable / long life service is up to 2 years or 20,000 miles. The car decides when it needs a service based on number of cold starts, journey length, oil quality etc. This interval is suited to high motorway mileage.

The annual or fixed service is 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever is reached first. Better for lower mileage and for those who keep their cars for a long time.

The engine oil is the lifeblood of the engine and turbo. In my opinion leaving it 2 years between changes is not good. For the sake of £100 fresh oil once a year is a no brainer.

Wear of the gear knob graphics seems quite common. Mine is just starting to show this at 54k miles.

There are a few threads on here about this and the one below suggests you can get a replacement insert from a Skoda dealer for less than £10.
