Changing for easier insurance

Featured Replies

With what I'd call minor changes a bit of a headache for insurance now this is my less important/2nd car !

Weighing up the benefits of each:

1 / Skoda 17"s spiders ( will probably carry on running for a year to wear out the RS3's I have on until its worth changing back to the standard 16s so then wouldn't need to mention)

That said, most don't really seem to add any loading for this.

2/ Cupra splitter ( is it worth the hassle, again). I agree it makes quite a nice change, but damn insurance.

3/ lowered springs. Nice for what its worth, but for what they add, they take away in comfort its important to note.

4/ leather seats. Maybe I could settle for std seats with darker covers, e.g. like the sport seats?

Yes I really like the seats, lowering etc, but is it worth the hassle of reduced insurance choices etc? I could punt the parts on later on.

I have to say though that there must be so many cars now with the above as default, that many must think its standard lol

I'm going to allow insurance to auto-renew for now, at my cost, but noting I could probably do at least £100 a year cheaper if not more, and life a lot easier, but just ticket the "no" box.

Perhaps this isn't really the basis you should look at it though but it is one of those really annoying things.

Just a shame they didn't make the car as default, as it should have been. At least with my mk3 vrs its sorted pretty much as default - and was even cheaper to insure !

I just do not understand insurance for the life of me.

My renewal price for the pulsar is near enough the same as the fabia all mods inc, with pulsar being roughly 100bhp more and more valuable.

Its confusing to say the least.

How much is your insurance? Mine crept up going from a 1.4 to a vrs but in the scale of my age and ncb it only moved from 700 to 1100 (that's with EVERY option though), and the 1.4 insurance did start at 1100 for my first year - it's not that bad!

The Fabia was £400 + 50 to include flux rescue.

The Pulsar is £460 but not including any rescue.

Both on limited 5000mile policy with 4 years protected ncb.

Its not too bad. Mines currently 700 or so with 2 Yr NCB plus all extra's and rescue.

Yeah that's a good price bud it'll only get cheaper as you acquire more ncb.

Yeh my insurance wouldn't insure me for a strut brace rarb and the seats I have in so its all coming off. :0(

Its true time and experience and care are in your favour. Mines £340 thats all in with breakdown and other crap, I don't actually need. It was actually cheaper last year but I can't be arsed to haggle as there is next to now haggle power when you have a few minor modifications to compare with.

But my best would have been £200 ish with next to no mods which did raise the thoughts.

Thats not much less than the octy 3 was to insure.

Its not the amount itself, its the effect it has on bartering that is bloody annoying. I'd go so far as to suggest compromise on this would make more sense, e.g. just blackening/dyeing or recovering standard seats, they can't possibly complain about that surely ?

But then this is the insurance industry we are on about here, they'd charge you for farting if they could.

I do feel for you guys with this painful insurance at your ages. You have to stick with it unfortunately as it does take a while before it stabilizes but still seems any changes certainly aren't in your favour.

Nah they have you bent over the table and boy do they know it, but such is life.

The only way to usually reduce it massively is through the telemetry boxes. Either that or go through a broker instead of mainstream searching through compare the market etc.

I'd recommend Only Young Drivers for anyone starting out - knocked my insurance down on my first year just after passing test from 2800 to 900 (1100 with all options on) which was pretty good.

I had a farcical conversation with a company today, who I know and wanted to give my business.

I knew certain changes would be an issue of those above so raised that with them, understood they would but that I would be happy to set to standard.

"no you can't do that"

Me- why not, its making it standard.

"because it will have been modified"

Yes but its being put back to standard! Standard equals standard !

"blah blah"....even had the front to argue with me that if I put to standard anyway, then tell them its standard, I would be breaching terms etc because it HAD been modified in the past and I would be effectively being fraudulent with them !  (Clowns)

How is that any different from any car bought anywhere? How is anyone 2nd hand buying put to std ever going to know ?

Total horsecrap, just shows how stupid and misinformed they are, or maybe it just the high percentage of misinformed clowns that tend to propogate in call centres and should be instead doing jobs like cleaning toilets instead. Will try a few other places on this point as its piqued my interest now.

If you can get close to matching my business with my original insurer you are welcome. Will give you a call.

This car should be like my "old banger" compared to my (completely standard) Octavia vRS, so it really shouldn't be worth all this hassle to be honest. But it is thankfully worth the effort or I would have just traded in when I had the other car.

That massively underrates the car though in saying that, its still a hell of a nice car and competent motor.

Done, one slight hickup we didn't seem to have got the springs recorded first time around, but I have been told + assured all is now still well for same price quoted. Very impressed.

Could have been cheaper elsewhere, without the modified stuff, but not much, and have got breakdown all in !

And the irony....it appears to have a policy underwritten by the very insurance company I mentioned in my point about when standard isn't standard !!!

Thanks Dan + staff.
