Scout TDi lumpy tickover !

Featured Replies

Hi All, I am up in the lakes and its started with a lumpy tickover,it seems to drive OK and I can give it a scan when I get home so are there any common problems to start with ? Engine mounts or fuel ? Cheers Stuart

Could be many things, I take it the car otherwise drives fine?

Dpf, fuel pump, fuel, boost leak, vacuum leak, glow plugs, dpf sensor, coolant temp sensor.

Hi thanks for the replys, apart from the rough tickover it drives OK and does it hot or cold ! Wouldnt have thought it would be the glow plugs as that would affect cold running, it could even be the engine mounts, I was just wondering if there has been any common faulys with the idle ? Cheers Stuart

Hi All, well I have done a scan on the car and its not come up with any problems !  so I am letting the fuel tank get right down in the red before I fill it up as it could have been mucky fuel ! cheers Stuart

Well its still doing it, could it be the EGR valve or pipes partly blocked ? if it was a carb I would go for the slow running jet ! I take it theres no idle injector with a PD ? cheers Stuart

Did you use vcds?

Yeh used VCDS and it didn't show up any faults,so I am thinking it could be a blocked pipe or sensor,it seems to drive OK poss slightly better when warming up,but you can feel a rough tickover, poss a leaking air pipe ? Any known faults ? Cheers Stuart

There a few potential sensor faults which could problems but not log a fault immediately. Could be slight boost leak.

I had the flexible pipe between the turbo and the hard pipe down to the intercooler split. Didn't throw any codes till it got really bad.

Hi Trundlenut, Thanks for that as it gives me somewhere to start looking, I was thinking it might be a clogged up egr valve or pipe, cheers Stuart

If the EGR was badly clogged it would likely throw an error. It may be worth logging some of the various measuring blocks with vcds to try and understand what is happening.

Oh, I also had issues with the tandem pump which caused a slight uneven idle and a sort of hiccup when applying the throttle at low revs. I think the tandem pump wasn't supplying sufficient fuel pressure.

Is it more like a vibration than a miss fire ? mine did something similar  and it was the DMF duel mass flywheel .

OK thanks for all of that, well I hope its not the DMF as that's a big job! Is there a test to confirm ?  Lift pump sounds like a poss as its hesitant when setting off (since new), are there any seals that wear that can be changed ? Watching measuring blocks which ones are favourable ? injectors ? cheers Stuart

Injectors, boost, EGR, coolant temp.
