NEW DRIVER - Parts and help needed

Featured Replies

Just bought myself a 2004 Fabia MK1 1.2 as my first ever car.

Need a new interior/courtesy light and 2 rear headrests. Anywhere I can get these pretty cheap?

Also, the passenger side window switch doesn't work, any tips on getting it to work again?

Thanks all.

Think I've got a courtesy light panel about somewhere I'll check

Passenger window: assuming it works from the button on the drivers side, then it's probably the switch at fault. They often go, so get a new one as ones from breakers are likely to be faulty. EBay has new ones reasonably cheap. Simple to fit, if I recall right you simply prise the top of the handle off where the switch is, disconnect wiring and pop the switch out.

If it doesn't work from drivers side either, and doesn't work when you hold the key in the door lock in the unlock position, it's more likely the motor at fault. For that, door card need to come off.

Won't be faulty if it's an even slightly decent breaker you're using!!!

Well yes, although I've been to some smaller breakers where you can whip bits off yourself, and then it's a gamble. Obviously usual rules for the return of faulty goods apply, but I'd still buy new with a small (and frequently failing) part like this. If only because if my secondhand part was faulty, I don't want to waste time returning it.

They seem to be starting at about £8 new on eBay (not genuine Skoda for that price I expect though).

Pretty much all breakers now test items to prevent these situations.

Your right, I'm wrong, buy one from a breakers.

Fair play mate. :)

I have always questioned the logic around certain common fault parts on cars like CTS etc which getting a cheapo one is a bad idea and won't last, but then again the issue is the official ones don't seem to either lol. If a part is going to be replaced though, I try to avoid cheapish ebay China bits and got for something from the manufacturer, be it new or used. This does not include my drivers door lock barrel on Octy, or the new £14.95 delivered window regulator (which likely won't last 15 years like the Skoda one, but I can't see me still having it in 15 years) etc. MAF I got the proper Bosch part (not from dealers for £250 but same part direct from Bosch for £65 and I wouldn't have touched a cheap one for that, but some things I do it seems.

If car is to serve you ling term seek the better quality parts, if it's not planned beyond 12 months get the cheapest part you can find IMO.

Breakers parts being 'likely to be faulty' I can't agree with though. If someone crashed into my car and it was written off tomorrow, aside from what they damage, there is not one single faulty part on the 15 year old car, absolutely every single thing works (bar that FRIGGIN crack in the windscreen, but that doesn't count). I'd recommend the parts from the likes of my car over China stuff on ebay to anyone. Will always be an element of chance with breakers, but beauty is if you actually take the car there you can test the part yourself there and then and cost you nothing if it doesnt work.

I agree on the bottom line.

If its an old car and its on its last legs anyway.. might aswel stick a chinese part in.

If its a new or nearly new car, OEM it is. I wouldnt have anything else in my Fab for a good while yet

I stuck Chinese rear door lock motor in my last fab, all it did was pop open every time you pressed lock, I gave up and unplugged it so used it manually. I've fitted other similar items for customers and more often than not come back and replaced this time with genuine new, good quality new or breakers genuine parts.

Yeah it's just the passenger switch, can do it all from my door!
