A PD lump is agricultural sounding, just the nature of the beast.

If it's worse than usual it may be a loose exhaust joint or holed pipe.

Yes. PDs do sound agricultural - it's part of their charm.

Check that you've got the soundproofing blanket under the bonnet lid.

If it really starts to get to you, there are various sound-proofing kits on the market that might help.

:D .

I sympathise with the Op. It's a totally practical car, but fookin noisy. Engine and road noise. On some road surfaces tyre noise is unreal, but on some - not bad.

I found my PD Octy Scout to be a revelation compared to the Honda Civic it replaced.

Tyre noise was all but eliminated once I replaced the Dunlop SP01's with Goodyear Efficient Grip (P-something!).

Outside noise does get in more since Škoda realigned both front doors to eliminate a high pitch whistle at speeds above 50mph, but I can still have a conversation at normal levels with front and rear passengers.

This sounds like a noise that never used to be present, that's how I read the OP's post. Could be tyres. Wind noise, DMF. All contenders on the Octy.

Exhaust leak, if a new turbo has been fitted the exhaust system has been disturbed and may not have been connected up 100%

Dual Mass Flywheel.

Ive just sound deadened the boot, however Im not sure if its made a difference!

I probably need a realignment done.

As above it could be an exhaust leak or intake (boost pipe) leak.

Yes it's a pretty noisy engine but never found it excessively noisy (mine's the 1.9 but they sound the same really).
