Michelin sport PS3-worn out in 2780 miles

Featured Replies

Haven't posted alot on here but I need some advice as how to proceed.

Bascically the VRS is my wife's car and it is used mainly to ferry the kids around. She doesn't drive it fast or abuse it in any shape or form.I do drive it from time to time but haven't in the last couple of months.

Basically back in the start of december last year I purchased 2 new front tyres, the tyres in question were  michelin sport PS3's which were recommended on here as a good tyre for the performance and wear. Before that all tracking etc was done,so the car was bang on with that.

So now we get to the problem. The tyres are down to the wear markers, and this has happened in about 4 months and the mileage done to date is 2850 miles since the tyres were fitted.

I would understand if the car had been tracked or doing excessive wheel spinning but in my mind something is not right.

I have phoned Michelin and kwik fit where the tyes were purchased and both have been very unhelpful and both said the same in that the tyres need to go back for inspection.I cannot afford to put another srt of tyres on this car unless i go crappy budget tyres.

I haven't heard of anyone getting the ridiculous amount of mileage out of a set of supposed good quality tyres.

Any thoughts on what could be happening and how to pursue this, because i feel very annoyed that they are worn out so soon.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Very very unusual if the wheels really have not been getting spun lots.

?

So what pressure did you set them at when they were fitted, and have you checked since.  What are they at now?

Been at factory setting for the nos of people in the car.I think around 2 bar iirc.

Had them checked by a mate who runs his own tyre place and he says that they are even across the tyres with no signs of uneven wear or abuse. He is advising me to pursue this with the manufacturer

Go in writing to Michelin CS HQ in UK, explaining as you have here and ask if there is any history of such a problem under "Normal " day to day use.

If they request removal for examination, why not ,for the short term(couple of weeks in summer motoring condition) invest in a low cost (say blackcircle) tyre.

You might even get a short term wear comparison to show Michelin that nothing is excessive in your wife's driving or the car set up .

Cheekily you could, if the outcome is in your favour ,ask Michelin to refund the cost of the temporary tyres ,as well as replacements.

Or ask Michelin to provide a pair, while tests are being undertaken on your questionable tyres?

The best tyres I've ever had, extremely grippy wet and dry. The tyres lasted a lot longer than i expected. I highly recommend these tyres, I've just ordered a new pair. Very confident in tyre performance on a wet road.

Very comfortable tyre and brilliant compliance compared to previous Bridgestone RE001s on there. They don't feel anywhere near as sticky however the wear and comfort between the 2 are on completely different levels. Would definitely buy again and helps especially with the road noise and harshness of a classic model WRX.

Very good tyres. Superb handling in dry and wet. Never had any problem although they did wear a bit too fast. Recently sold my car so I don't know how they did when worn more. For the 35k kilometers I drove them they were excellent. For the hot Greek roads in the summer the soft compound of Michelin is currently the best.

Driving a Ford c max (235/40 R18 V) on mostly country roads for 13,000 average miles

Wet and dry grip are excellent and the tyres are comfortable enough. Noise is not an issue as any tyres tend to be noisy on the rough finish secondary roads of the rural area where they are used. This means that I am much more concerned about grip and stability and these tyres do this very well indeed particularly so when travelling quickly on twisting narrow roads with sudden dips and climbs off camber. Wear is not what you may reasonably expect from a premium tyre even allowing for the abrasive surfaces that they spend most of the time on. The fronts lasted 13K before they needed replacing and dropped off quite quickly. On long distance motorway/autobahn trips they were fine, not intrusively noisy.

Started by buying these tyres after having a asian made cheap tyre. Thought of it as a treat for myself.

From the outset I the car felt better! Half the road noise and much less rolling resistance. In the dry felt planted to the road. In the wet you still felt attached to the road, took a fair push to make the tyres break traction. The fuel consumption in my case went from 13.8 to 13.4 over time. I am very happy with the tyres paying some of their cost back that way. Living in Melbourne Australia, the road conditions never get that bad in real terms. But these tyres are great!

Given 80% (breakdown) while driving a Jaguar S Type R (4.2 Supercharged) (245/40 R18 W) on a combination of roads for 4,000 spirited miles

Very good grip in the dry, and good in wet conditions too. Very sporty tyres which suited my Jag S Type R very well but they seemed very lacking in comfort and a lot noisier than I'd have expected from a top end tyre.

I'm not sure I'd bug again as offerings from Goodyear, Dunlop and continental are cheaper and seem to get similar write ups. I'd hope the Goodyear's/Dunlop's would be quieter given the EU noise ratings they have.

Given 90% (breakdown) while driving a BMW Z4 E86 3.0si Coupe  (225/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 30,000 average miles

A tremendous tyre. In earlier days ran Bridgestone RFT's which without exaggeration were dangerous for their tramlining habits - on a Z4 coupe at least. Moved to [non-run-flat] Pilot Sport 3's on the rear after also fitting non-run-flat PS2's to the run, and the difference is night and day: the car rides beautifully considering a fairly stiff set-up to start with, behaves impeccably as a rule - no more tramlining to speak of, is a generally comfortable and pleasant tyre, and they have lasted very well indeed - 33,000 miles, which for a Z4 coupe I think is incredible. Finally need replacing now though, so a second set of PS3's has just been ordered. If your car suffers from tramlining or has a tendency to wear prematurely on cheaper tyres I can recommend the PS3 wholeheartedly - all in all they're fantastic value.

Not bad but certainly not the best. These came with my 911. Dry handling is good, not bad in rain but forget the snow. Rear tread lasted 12,000 miles. I have a 2006 Turbo with Bridgestone's. I highly recommend Bridgestone tires for any 911 Porsche.

I really like the tyre. reat at dry. Great at rain. BUT i was almost killed running at 40 km/hour because of LITTLE snow . The car was not drivable . If you live at a sunny area these are the best. If it has snow even little be really carefull with these. I will not buy again due to high price and zero safety on snow Ps. i know they are not supposed to be snow tyres. Being a snow tyre is one thing and being dangerous one snow is another..
