Glow plugs change , how often ?

Featured Replies

I'm doing a full service on my car Friday and was and how often do you change the glow plugs ? It's a CR TDi VRS on a 2011 plate . It's only done 49 thousand. The car starts up fine .

Leave them. If they work. Or if you change them. Soak them a good few days before they love snapping.

They can degrade a lot before they fail completely and bring up and error code but it depends how anal you are. The car will start fine without them in our climate as its the post starting that aids in keeping emissions and smoke down where they do most of their work even when its not cold.

When they do fail I don't think they bring on the EML either so unless you scan it periodically you could have one fail which may lead to a bit more soot clogging up the DPF on startup, but I bet its only a minute amount.

I changed them on my B5.5 Passat as in the cold weather I got a bit of smoke after it started up, the ones that were in still worked in a fashion but replacing them made a massive difference, it never logged any codes for the either

Err my car has 2 of them of not working and it still starts fine... it'll start struggling in the really cold weather but otherwise it's ok.
