Did anyone look at a Superb 2 first?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've already posted a somewhat similar thread in the Superb Mk2 forum so my apologies if some of you have read that already.

I am considering the purchase of a new car, but I cannot make my mind up to have another Octavia - albeit a Mark 3, I'm fed up of looking at the inside of a Mk2 since 2009 and want something different.

I have located a 15 plate Superb Mk2 2.0TDI CR 140 DSG SE for 15K which is a pretty good price.

There are also a few decent Octavia Mk3 15 plate for similar money but no DSG :( That is bad times. They are for 1.4 petrol 140 or 150PS but I can't find a 150PS Elegance DSG at all (I think that would be my preferred model)

So what I am wondering is - if any of you chose a Mk3 Octavia over a late Mk2 FL Superb and why?

Thanks

EDIT However, I did own a Diesel vRS Mark 2 Octavia before but I pined after a petrol DSG and there are a few low mileage examples around for 12-13K. Even found a nice Estate Blue for that money too.

Clearly I have some decisions to make.....

I had a 58 plate Superb 2 before my Octavia and I test drove a 14 plate model while making my decision.

I chose the Octavia because:

  • I preferred the firmer ride of the Octavia. (Some people hate it).
  • I found the driving position more comfortable.
  • Sorry guys, but I think you drive the Octavia but pilot the Superb. Its handling is a bit soft.
  • With one exception, the interior (and boot space) is the same.
  • The interior / controls etc felt more up to date.

However

  • I miss the bags of leg room in the back
  • The whole "limo" experience

Having said that - the Superb 3 will definitely be on the list for the replacement

Good point on the interior and a big plus point for the Mk3 Octavia. The Mk2 Superb interior isn't really much, functionally speaking over and above what I have got already, whilst the Mk3 Octavia one looks much better and is essentially a newer car. The FL MK2 Superb, whilst a fine car, would be a good buy because it is the last of the FL models. My wife bagged a cheap Ford Focus by buying the last of the FL models because everyone of course would prefer to buy the new model and there was a lot to be said for that.

I had 2 Superbs mk 2 (before and after FL), and now I've switched to Octavia 1.8 in L&K. Well, anyhow - I simply did not want to drive 4th Superb in a row (yeah - Mk1 was there too) - thus the change ;)

Overall cars are quite similar and I wouldn't say that Superb handles bad...Octy is indeed more direct, but it's not the whole world of difference imo.

Personally I have mixed feelings - Superb 2 is not as fresh as Octy3, but the overall space inside is making a difference (even if not so-so on paper). Biggest downside of Octy3 in comparison to Superb is suspension comfort and noise dampening in general.

So pick and choose: a bit fresh and sporty or smooth and quiet with a touch of extra space.

Only problem is the Mk2 Superb prices will fall quite rapidly now the mk3 is out, and getting rave reviews. The Mk2 is a bit a 'pudding' to look at compared to the mk3.

If you can stretch your budget a bit, or if it doesn't have to be diesel, which if you dont do high miles would be better, then have a look here, its suprising what you can get new with a good discount.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I don't know what I am allowed to spend yet, but I'm in the 16K bracket, and can afford to stretch a bit more. This will allow me vRS DSG Petrols (which is what I've wanted for the longest time)

I think I will go and test a few cars and have some fun for a few days before deciding. If I don't go vRS I'd like an SE L DSG  not sure on petrol or diesel. I like the torque of a diesel, but I haven't driven the newest engines to know how the refinement is.

Whatever I buy I intend to get my moneys worth out of it so I will make sure I get what I really want and try not to compromise.

Only thing I could add is that unless you have a very good reason (extreme distances to cover on regular basis) to go with diesel - don't.

I'm not sure how it looks from tax perspective in UK, but in Germany diesels cost you more to register/maintain.

From performance point - the gasoline TSI has anyway much more torque than the wheels can put on the pavement. Diesel would bring no benefit in this department, i guess unless you go 4x4 and tow a trailer. Diesel, in Octy especially, means much more noise and vibe.

My 2nd Sup was 1.8 160PS. A lovely combo, only glitch being some jitter on 2nd gear later in its lifetime, but that was due to early version of DSG7 and (in)famous clutch problems. The engine itself was inaudible when on low rpm with tons of torque (high, flat characteristic).

My last Sup was 170PS 2.0 TDI which wasn't bad but no where as quiet, smooth nor responsive as TSI. The fuel saving was also rather questionable (in my case difference was less than 1l/100km TDI vs TSI).

Also note that in Octy 1.8TSI does have overall output (acceleration) better than RS diesel.

Now I'm back to exactly that TSI machine in my new Octy and it's the best part of the car imo...giving it 4x4 wouldn't hurt though ;)

I really want a petrol one. I've no interest in 4x4 or towing. I only do 7K miles a year.

I am going to hold out for a 1.4 DSG 150 SE L or I might just go all out and go petrol RS.

I looked at both the Octavia III and the Superb II last year when I was changing cars (as well as a few others such as Seat Leon Touring) but chose a Superb II 1.4tsi in the end, reasons:-

1)      It was sooo refined (Octavia tsi engine refined but had more road/wind noise and it had a funny noise from the rear – or was it my ears)

2)      Much more rear legroom

3)      Slightly smoother ride- which I prefer, especially after owning a Superb I

4)      My driving position was much better due to the bigger front doors (I’m tall and find the door pillar obstructs on the Octavia III & Leon)

5)      I was worried about economy – but was impressed after an extended test drive

6)      It was much cheaper (I’m from Yorkshire) - depreciation will be heavier but I myself usually own for a long time and throw away at the end

7)      On the facelift even the S models had steering wheel controls / bluetooth

8)      The Superb II was already fitted with a spare tyre

Negatives:- Wasn’t initially a fan of the twin door boot / hatch mechanism but actually like it now. Was really useful when opening the boot on a ferry last year (hatch would have hit the roof)

If you do 7k / y I believe there is absolutely no way to meet the numbers with diesel. Especially one with DPF would one day give you extra problems / expenses if you do short trips only.

I do 25-35kkm/y and still diesel "does not compute"...additional comfort of TSi being a nice bonus;)

As for Octy/Sup puzzle - give them both a try. If I had no Sup before though, I believe I would take one now, but at the end it all boils down to personal preferences.

Cheers!

You've all be rather helpful, thanks :)

Yes, I also looked at the outgoing model (as was being replaced with the mk3) so offers were good on the outgoing FLMK2 Superb.

Reasons why I went for the Octavia MK3.

1) vRS

2) Newer model on the MBQ platform.

3) Slightly smaller than the Superb (parking issues)

Reasons for the Superb

1) size.....bigger in every way (other half actually loved the superb as she could sit in the boot as if it was a living room!!)

2) very nice to drive

3) Bargain!!

I think if I was back at order point again, I would have actually opted for the MK3 Superb over the Octavia MK3, even though that would have meant loosing the vRS part.

Yeah 15K for a year old Superb 2.0TDI DSG is a flippin' bargain.

But I can stretch enough for a vRS Petrol DSG Octy 3 which is what my heart is telling me. Leasing works out even better for me...

Try & find a low mileage 2.0 TSi. Not many sold in the UK but a great Q car, it's the same engine as the  Octy vRS &

with a decent remap (249 bhp / 261 ft/lbs) it's much quicker than it looks.

Silly fuel consumption too worst is app 32 mpg but the long-term avge is 36+ mpg.

Nice toys, electric leather seats, Columbus sat-nav, decent build quality & more leg-room than you'll ever need!

Easy to park too, it's a long car but not too wide for garage doors/ parking spaces.

There is one for sale here on the classifieds and I could find ONE on autotrader...

Definatley try a 1.4 TSi DSG, they are 150ps and turbo, so pretty nippy. Probably not much different to the diesel you have.

Also consider Seat Leon 1.4 TSi DSG, hatch or estate, essentially the same car, but with even better deals.

That's a nice car, seriously loaded, maybe a bit pricey though, when are you going to buy it..............?

As far as I am aware no Skoda Superb II's were Euro 6 (I've got a friend with a 65 plate Superb II euro 5!)

Euro 6 hit the Octavia III much earlier - good for the environment but bad re SCR/adblue and more intricate EGR valves

Seriously considered a perb2, only reason it wasn't pursued was that SWMBO wasn't happy driving a longer car (she has a habit of knocking bits off the corners)

TBH, I can stretch to a Petrol DSG vRS Mk3 and that is really what I should buy because that's what I really, I mean, *really* want.

In that case, try streching a little futher & go for a vRS 230. More toys, including memory drivers seat + memory mirrors, a little more go + the

clever differental, for not much more money.

Worth looking for discounts too.

Used? I can't find a single one. There's 3 220 DSG's for £18K though.

Try Skoda's own used car web-site. There's a Corrida Red hatch coming up for sale in a Chesterfiled Skoda dealer

& a Meteor Grey car in Skoda Watford.

That's on Auto-Trader, but it's been hidden, by describing it as a "semi-automatic" rather than manual or automatic.

There's also a brand-new estate for sale in Kings Lynn Skoda, but it's at full price though.

I've driven it, it's a nice car but it pulls to the left a bit.............

Yeah I don't have £25K sadly :D

The one on autotrader is nice, but again that's 5K more than the three I've found.
