Getting Netflix on a nonsmart telly I am stuck help

Featured Replies

Ok so it's not for me it's for my parents who look after my daughter a few days a week

I gave them my Sony bravia which although it is a smart TV it can't add apps to it

I want to get Netflix onto it but not sure which dongle to get

Don't want to spend a bundle just looking for the cheapest way possible with least amount of fuss

Looked at Chromecast but it appears they would then need to stream from one if the android mobiles if I understand it correctly

Not a problem at my end as all our tv's have Netflix built in plus we have an Xbox one

Yes, plug in, connect to WiFi and away you go.

they have a bt hub 5 within a few metres of the tv

they have a bt hub 5 within a few metres of the tv

Should be fine then it can use 5ghz as well as 2.4ghz wifi.

Thank you

You may need to turn smart setup off on the hub as you may have issues connecting a fire stick to it

Cool thank you

Re the Chromecast; you don't need to stream from a mobile. I use the Chrome browser and an app called Videostream https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/videostream-for-google-ch/cnciopoikihiagdjbjpnocolokfelagl?hl=en to play my downloaded films/ TV shows. You also need to add the Chromecast extension to the Chrome browser.

This is a very useful guide for getting Chromcast from PC to TV http://www.howtogeek.com/199565/mirror-anything-from-your-computer-to-your-tv-using-google-chromecast/

I never use it myself for Chromecast as my BT Youview box has Netflix built in. Might be an option if they're with BT anyway? http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/products/tv-packages?s_cid=con_ppc_maxus_vidZ60_T1&vendorid=Z60&gclid=Cj0KEQjwrZ24BRC098fr-OqnuMkBEiQAKQ9lgIViUC7RMYFV1uMBJmgAxy90A2idcNgZNE-tk8JquqUaAraK8P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CNmcx57Z_8sCFWxacgodiX0MCQ

The Fire TV is a great little device. Got one in the bedroom. You can sideload android apps (the ones not available on the amazon app store) such as Kodi media centre and it will play anything you throw at it.

I've also got a Fire TV box downstairs as that supports 4k (Netflix 4k too although current 4k content is fairly limited).

The problem with the Chromecast is it always requires a 3rd party smartphone, tablet or pc to control it and tell it what to play. The fire TV is simpler in this respect as you just grab the remote and choose what to play.

I use a Roku box as my old telly has no USB or HDMI, yellow red and white composite cables work a treat - Netflix, iPlayers of all sorts, Amazon Prime etc work fine.

Just to update this thread

My parents have ordered bt TV and that has a Netflix app built in

Thank you so much for all the replies

Yeah and it works well.

Just signed into Netflix on our friends BT Youview box and it worked very well.
