Fake cat shell - who sells them?

Featured Replies

Seen fake cat shells mentioned on the forum but been searching around and cannot find anywhere that sells them, cannot find them on ebay.

I have a stainless down pipe (de-catted) and might as well get a dummy cat shell welded to it before fitting so I don't have any MOT issues in the future.

Thanks

Diesels don't need cats for mot :)

They also don't benefit from de-catting since it's the VNT mechanism which controls turbo spool and boost pressure.

Thanks for the replies.

I have read the MOT tester manual and aware I do not need a cat (particle filter or whatever you want to call it) but as I am going to be getting a mounting bracket welded to the down pipe I would like to get a fake cat shell welded to it at the same time, this will future proof the exhaust and pre-empt any possible issues at MOT time.

The downpipe is for a GTB1756 conversion and will be mapped accordingly, it won't be fitted to a standard car.

I thought you needed a cat present if the car left the factory with one?

Im pretty sure the visual inspection includes checking to see a cat is in place, it's just the practicality of it that doesnt get tested.

I thought the new rules were if the car left the factory with a cat then it has to be there for the visual inspection. I'm in the same boat. Mot is next Saturday so I might put a big metal plate under the decat.

I know coskev has a dummy cat welded over his decat but I can't find any sellers myself online.

It just depends how strict the tester is.

Most of them that are on your level know you will either fit a fake on or put your standard exhaust in place, MOT it, then fit the decat again.

Yup, definitely the case that the new regulations state that if a car had a catalytic converter fitted at the factory, then it must visually be present for diesels.

I have a fake one welded over my exhaust, same as Kev. We used a local Longlife exhaust dealer. So your best best would be to find a custom exhaust builder locally and see what they can do for you.

I initially thought it was spark ignition only but re-reading the MOT tester manual section 7.1 Point 3 it is petrol and diesel cars:

Reason for rejection: "A catalytic converter or particle filter missing where one was fitted as standard"

If the exhaust builders are getting hold of the dummy cat shells must be possible to buy them from somewhere, question is where!

They also don't benefit from de-catting

that's what I thought for years but since the last two MOT's it's noticeably quicker when it comes back  (I'm not trying hard enough)   so I'm interested too

Again, my shell came from the custom exhaust builders i used in Macclesfield called JP Exhausts. HTH.

As did I.
