Which ever you go for try to find ones with decent Rim Protectors, just for a bit more protection.

I usually put on 215/40 R 17 W87 XL, just for some protection from potholes, but i still wreck tyres quite often.

but right now have on inexpensive 205/40 R ZR W84 XL & they are good.

I recently bought 205/45 RS3's and I'm quite happy with them, the ride has certainly changed comfort wise from the 205/40 dunlops that were originally on.

205/45 should give the tallest sidewall and in theory flex more and be more comfy. Then again this apparently varies greatly between different brands and makes. Been reading about this myself lately, got no experience with it.

This is a few different 215/ 40 R 17's ,  all marked M+S & costing from £50-£70 or so fitted. other than the Pirellis.

(so considered by many as ditch finders,  i find them rather good.)

*Pirelli Zero Nero 205 / 40 R 17 can be taller than some tyres that are 215/40 R 17*

Pirelli Zero Nero 215/40 R 17 are pretty indestructible,  but you will have lots of flashing TC lights in the wet unless you have a very light foot.

I am going to try my now favourite TIGAR  Syneris tyres in 205/45 R 17 next time.

£102 a pair fitted at ATS Euromaster.  (those are 205/40 ZR 17 in the last picture on the right, about £92 a pair fitted.)

Will the 205/45 R17 make much difference to the speed reading compared to the 40 profile?

Will make a bigger difference than changing just 205 to 215 - As you're increasing the sidewall height by another 5% of the tread width.

Makes it just a bit more accurate.

As it is the New Pirelli Zero Nero 205/40 R 17 are bigger than New Dunlop Sport Maxx in a 205/40 R 17

The 205/45 R 17 might have the Speedo and Cruise Control at 72 mph when doing 70 mph.

But LGM should be able to say.

PS

205 / 45 R 17  is not the tread width of 205 mm.  the measurement is the width of the tyre, side wall to side wall,

and Tread on the ground of a 215 can sometimes be less than that of a 205.

Some tyres with rim protectors measure wide, the tread on the road is not.

I have hundreds of pics of side by side comparisons.

The numbers on the side of tyres is not the whole story.

Brand, and tread and seasonal tyre design makes a difference.

It is why Skoda / VW / Seat / Audi put skittery and taller Pirelli Zero Nero that are not directional on as

their fix for Pulling Left.

Side by side you can see the different tyre profile and tread on the ground.

Found a few images of a a Fabia with 205/45 R17 (Hancock Ventus) thought they might look too big, but looks ok I think.

I like my cars with some clearance and not lowered. but that white Fabia looks like it still has transportation blocks in.

(Or sitting on axle stands.)

Haha it does.

How good is the rim protection on your Tigar Syneris?

There is some there when fitted to Gigaro's.  Not lots.

Dunlop Sport Maxx have about as much rubber sticking out, but chucks can easily be taken out of that, the rubber is pretty soft.

I just try to stay well away from kerbs but then it looks like i can not park.

(actually i am rubbish at it.)

It is not normally me that kerbs my wheels, it is nearest and dearest & Borrowers,

& they hit Iron Works in the road more than me.  I hit potholes in the dark, sometimes in the daylight when you have no room to avoid.

Low profiles are just pants really. *Touch parking is not an option!*

Not looking forward to the first time I kerb my Gigaros :-(

Holy moly that white vRS rides high. I haven't lowered my car, but I can't remember it being that tall. Then again I bought it used so I don't know what the springs are. Does the eibachs look different than other springs? Do they have any markings on them?

Edit: Nevermind, just googled it. Definitely have the original springs. I gotta take a long, hard look at my fabia later and see if it also has that amount of wheel gap from that angle.

That white car is not a vRS.

My red car rides at standard height on new standard springs fitted last year.

True, I missed that. Just saw the gigaros and immediately dismissed the rest of the car.

Anyone purchased some new tyres recently going to order some when I come back off my Hols ;)

I haven't yet but just can't decide I keep going back to the Michelin pilot sport 3's

I've just had a full set of Rainsport 3's on my vRS, I went for 215/40/17 and am very happy. Reduced the harshness and noise a little too which is welcome.

Flexbile Mouse: Did you just replace your current tyres from 205/40/R17 with a Rainsport 3 as 215/40/R17 without any mods?

I had Vredsteins 205/40/R17 and need a set of four but not keen to make any changes to rims.
