Superb wheels size options.

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I'm new to Skoda and am buying a superb when they start building again later this year (2018). It comes with 17" wheels as standard. There are 18's available as an optional extra. They look better but was wondering wether the ride would be any different at all.

In essence, would you pay a further £500 for bigger wheels or are the 17's worth sticking with?

Many thanks..

I paid the £650 option for 19’s.  (L&K)

The car car has been designed with 19’s in mind and as such the ride quality is still good on the 19”.

I can't give you a full answer as I don't remember how it was to drive with 17" wheels on a test drive Superb but IMHO 18" is an optimum wheel size for Superb. It looks good enough and gives you good enough driving comfort.

But there is a but. 18" comes with wider tyres (235) and it means a bit bigger fuel consumption and big raise in tyre prices when you start needing new wheels.

That said, I am very happy with my 235/45 R18 tyres and would not look towards 17" myself.

Thank you for your comments. I'll may be look at the 18's but wont be too worried about having 17's either then. Pro's and con's with both I suppose.

I have the 18 inch Pegasus with 235 45 18 Pirelli P7. I also have DCC.

If you value a quiet ride, comfort, fuel economy, and reasonable cost of tyre replacement, stick with the 17” wheels.

If you want bling, upgrade. Though I must say the 19" Trinity alloys look the nicest.

With my 18” wheels and P7 there is far too much road roar (surface dependent) and if you flick the DCC to sports setting its a very uncomfortable ride. Running over road joints, manholes etc are noisy events in any mode.

Can't wait to ditch the P7s

Another point is that as far as I know only the 17" wheels have the choice a factory option for all season tyres - at £150.  I have a 2018 1.4  Tsi estate with the 17" all seasons which I'm happy with.  No idea if they fit various brands of all seasons    but mine came with Continental Conticontact-ts815 seal in a 215/55/17 size  They seem to be fairly new on the market. The "Seal" refers to some sort of coating inside the tyre that supposedly seals small punctures.

As for their performance - they are good in the wet and dry. They seem comfortable and quiet. Very good over bad surfaces. Time will tell as to how good the snow/ice grip is.

Just drove my Dad's 62 plate Superb Elegance on standard 18" alloys with 225/40vr18 tyres and surprised how comfortable the ride was. The car has done 66,500 miles as well.

Will your car have DCC? My Mk2 Superb on 17s without DCC gave a good ride quality. My current Mk3 with DCC is at least as good on 18s as the old one was on 17s. Can't comment on non-DCC Mk3 as I didn't test drive one. Does your local dealer have examples of both so you can test back to back?

Depending on your view on road noise, the £500 might be better spent on upgrading the tyres. My P7s are horribly noisy.

And welcome to Briskoda!

My Mk3 has 18" wheels as standard (SE-L Exec spec) and rides better than the Mk2 did on 18's due to the higher tyre profile.  It's a little noiser (but I think thats likely the Continental Tyres not the wheels).  Not as fussed about curbing either as they are quite high profile.

17's would be better if you regularly drive on rough roads (as opposed to smoother motorways).

I'm quite happy with the 18s on mine and they are so much more comfortable compared to the 18s offered on previous Mk IIs (with the 40 profile) which I hated.  I have Pegasus wheels as well and they really well.  I've only briefly driven 17s on the MkIII and any difference in ride quality isn't overly noticeable.  I always find it strange that here in Ireland, the only standard wheels are 17" and 19" (on L&K and Sportline) and 18s are only offered as option across all models.

Appreciate all the responses. I did notice a lot of road noise with the 18's on test drive but like you say, could be the tyre type.
