dealers, offers and discounts

A rather complicated process I think we'll agree. Sometimes it works like a charm from the very first moment you meet someone, others you just don't feel the love... Don't know how it happens, but the first scenario is usually with cars you're not that crazy about and the second one when you really want that car.

Reason I'm writing this is I am currently considering an offer from VW seriously, although it comes with the lowest discount I received on any car I asked about so far: 6,88% when I got anything from 7,5 to 9% in Audi, BMW and SEAT and what bothers me is the fact that I detect an attitude of "you were given a discount bigger than a human can ever dream of - you can't possibly ask for more?" when I know for a fact I've had better offers (on different cars that were no less premium than the one in question). I mean I get that there might be different limits as to what a salesman can offer from dealership to dealership or brand to brand but I'd appreciate if it was expressed like "I'm really sorry this is as low as I can go", rather than trying to fool me into thinking I've got the best discount ever offered to a client.

Do people think it's ok to be pushing for that little extra and does it usually pay off or ends up in braking the relation you've built with the salesman that far? It obviously makes no real difference financially, I just did the mistake of not bargaining at all during my last purchase (what a happy salesman that guy must have been then) and I may find myself going to the exact opposite end this time, just to see what happens.

Is this on Golf GTI Clubsport LE production run - journos say approx. 1000 mk7?? will be made.

Always a problem getting much discount. I remember having the issue with with my old Skoda Fabia mk1 vRS SE - mind you it had £ 2k of extras thrown in,  compared to  standard and 1000 embossed seat nos. Oh! Bloody good residual when sold.

Bargain!!

Yes it's the 40 year special edition and all but my info is a bit different. I think it's a limited production period model rather than a limited number. So, the way I understand it they're not really going to be numbered in the sense of "0001, 0002" until say no. 1000 is reached and then stop but rather orders for them are going to be accepted from say April to December this year or something like that. How many will be actually made will depend on how many are ordered, at least that's what I know. Still limited I agree. I understand special editions get smaller discounts but I think we;ll agree they're not exactly losing money on them either. Also, it was never mentioned to me that the "uniqueness" of the model is what makes it hard to offer a bigger discount, I might have fallen for that as it sounds nice. So after I got a rather cold answer on the possibility of throwing a warranty extension while keeping to the agreed price I have asked for more time to think.

Realistically only a couple as I don't want to have to drive more than 50km to get there. I'll try the second one tomorrow to see if it can get any better although if I judge by your inquiry, I might have to be quite happy with what I got already!

2nd offer received today from another UK discounter. Now waiting for a couple of UK Dealership asked directly. However, your current offer looks pretty good .

.

Comparing discount levels across manufacturers /brands it even car models to see if you got a good deal is fairly pointless imho. Too much variation in dealer margin and manufacturer support etc to make comparison useful.

Far better to decide on the exact spec of car you want inc options I.e the Golf Clubsport you are after and then ring/email as many dealers as you can fit their best price/deal. Just make it clear you are a serious buyer and ready to order. That's the best way to gauge if the 6.88% discount you have been offered is good or if there is more to be squeezed from the deal :-)

I found out it doesn't work exactly that way as the main (and only?) VW importer shares info between dealerships in different towns. So when I went to next town's VW asking for an offer on the config I want they basically said "oh we see you've already got an offer from our colleagues there, well we can't better that offer as we have a "match price warranty" meaning we can only offer exactly the same but not go below it",  I guess it's to do with avoiding internal competition since it's the same company basically. Which doesn't leave that many options really.

Not that it's a bad discount. Judging by vrskeith's findings and a quick online search, in other EU markets the CS is selling for significantly more and as you say, different models on different brands and there's not much useful comparison to be made between them. I think I've maxed out the money I can save on this particular model. Now if I only was sure I needed all those extras I've thrown to it...

Large competitive dealership has replied to me saying, that currently no discounts will be offered on GTI Clubsport. As the model is Limited volume. So pretty much as a few of us thought. 12weeks delivers after order placement.

Hope you get an improved response from your other Swedish dealership.

So, considering that in Sweden it's offered at the same price as the normal GTI, and I got a 6,88% discount on an absolutely fully loaded one, I think I should be celebrating already?  :D

Best of luck then. Get ordering!

Sorry i missed it somehow,

Has a new VW Golf GTI Clubsport been offered for supply in Sweden and now ordered for the price of a VW Golf GTI?

So what spec is it, and what was the final price of it?

Sorry i missed it somehow,

Has a new VW Golf GTI Clubsport been offered for supply in Sweden and now ordered for the price of a VW Golf GTI?

So what spec is it, and what was the final price of it?

1) It is available for ordering yes - ordered from me? not yet!

2) Yes it's true. VW Sweden offers the Clubsport at the same base price as a standard Golf GTI: 311K sek ~ £26,750  although not exactly loaded with extras, still manages to stay quite cheaper than the R when you add many of them, and renders the GTI pretty much pointless for as long as you can order a Clubsport at least.

3) My spec is: Carbon steel gray metallic, DSG6, Bi-Xenon (standard in the UK i think), Discover Pro (highest infotainment option), Clubsport bucket seats, Dynaudio hi-fi sound system, Dynamic Chassis Control (adaptive suspension). These are the expensive options and then some like parking sensors, folding mirrors etc. and it rises to ~ £33,300  I can have it for 31,000 which I think is not bad all things considered.

  • Author

Same spec in the UK costs: £37,075  without a discount, hard to get anywhere near the 31K mark even if you were offered one (discount).

Get it bought :-)

Looks a cracking car. The upgraded seats are very special!

If I could only finalize the spec... Can't - for the life of me - decide on whether I should keep all those extras. More importantly:

1) Dynaudio hi-fi:  Listened some FM Radio to it on a show car, didn't sound that jaw-dropping as people in VW forums describe it. Listened to the standard system and it was much better than expected. I think the MK7 is built such that it aids acoustics a lot. No rattles or vibrations or anything like that, clear sound reproduction.

2) Discover 8" Navigation/Multimedia system. Yes looks nice, and it will make the car look younger in a few years time when all screens will have grown up in size judging by current infotainment trends but, is it worth almost £800 more?

3) Bucket seats: Yes I know how special they are and they definitely transform the interior but are there going to be as comfy as they are special in long-term journeys? I hope being a Golf after all they haven't gone with a super stiff design but having no possibility to try them gives me second thoughts.  Feck, they're staying!

4) Should I add a 2 year warranty extension? That's probably lottery...

Edited by newbie69

^^ the bucket seats are the real party piece of the Clubsport imho. Definitely needs them. Ordering one without its proper seats would be like having an Indian takeaway and opting for just Rice and Naan and leaving off the curry lol ;-)

My thoughts exactly. And even if they turn out harsh they're likely to be much wanted by other VAG vehicle owners, US guys are already looking into importing them for retro-fit to their GTI/Rs.

Ok,  I can cross that one out... 3 more to go....

So conclusion from Discounters via VW Dealerships. On a £35k spec'd GTI Clubsport.

Orangewheels - Zero!

Carwow, 5 quotations from UK VW Dealerships

4 Zero

1- submitted approx. £1750 off RRP approx 4.9 saving.

Yeah in the end I realized I must have got quite a good deal given the model in question.

  • 3 months later...

Just to throw my 2 cents in - I'm currently helping my dad buy a new car as he isn't much good when it comes to haggling or looking around for better deals and discounts etc.

He'd specced a brand new MK8 VW Passat 2.0TDI GT 190 with a few options that came up with a list price of about £33.5k. He was considering paying that, thinking as it was a brand new model ordered from the factory, discounts would be slim. I then interfered and checked out Drive the Deal and Carwow with the exact spec and car he wanted. Drive the deal came back with a price of around £26.5k which I almost couldn't believe, and then yesterday the Carwow quotes came back, and sure enough, out of the 5 that we got, 3 of them were for the same price! Ranging from £26.3k to around £26.7k. They literally took 20% off?! I never imagined they'd discount new cars like that at all! Are they that desperate to sell? My dad will phone the first dealer he visited and ask if they can match it, and if not he's going to order from one of the other dealers instead! As you can imagine I'm his favourite son at the moment lol!
