dealers, offers and discounts

Featured Replies

Just to throw my 2 cents in - I'm currently helping my dad buy a new car as he isn't much good when it comes to haggling or looking around for better deals and discounts etc.

He'd specced a brand new MK8 VW Passat 2.0TDI GT 190 with a few options that came up with a list price of about £33.5k. He was considering paying that, thinking as it was a brand new model ordered from the factory, discounts would be slim. I then interfered and checked out Drive the Deal and Carwow with the exact spec and car he wanted. Drive the deal came back with a price of around £26.5k which I almost couldn't believe, and then yesterday the Carwow quotes came back, and sure enough, out of the 5 that we got, 3 of them were for the same price! Ranging from £26.3k to around £26.7k. They literally took 20% off?! I never imagined they'd discount new cars like that at all! Are they that desperate to sell? My dad will phone the first dealer he visited and ask if they can match it, and if not he's going to order from one of the other dealers instead! As you can imagine I'm his favourite son at the moment lol!

Is that including a PCP contribution or is that for cash & px?

Neither - just cash. They only offered £500 for his car which is worth about £2000 so he wasn't interested in that and unless some sort of finance agreement worked out cheaper he just wanted to pay cash from his savings. Clearly there are big discounts on some VW models at the moment!

And because of how much money he saved, he added a couple of other options which should have come too about £1000 but without asking the garage seemed to discount them as well. He'll also get matts and a full tank of fuel thrown in. An astonishing deal I think really.

I can prove it if people aren't believing me? No point making it up! But yes, he has genuinely got the 190 GT with options for just over £27k.

Discounts of 20% are not that unusual and can be as high as 25% or more on some of the bigger Audi's (A6, A7, etc.).

Occasionally, DtD have a limited number of vehicles a dealer is trying to offload, so they come pre-specified and a limited range of colours and specs., but I've seen 35% off A7's. That's a lot of car for mid-spec A4 money.

Yeah, he wanted his built for him so he was insistent on ordering it from the factory and having a 66 plate. He's treated himself, so why not. I'll definitely use DtD and Carwow myself next time I come to buy a new car.

Ah ok, my apologies! Yeah it is odd isn't it. Especially as the £ isn't great against the € I thought cars from Europe could end up being a bit more expensive at the moment.

Theres a reason a lot of people buy their cars second hand as UK imports over here - waay more value compared to buying here, as the new car prices here are that much higher and VRT jacks it up even more :s
