Turbo whistle 1.8 TSI

Featured Replies

When I floor it the turbo spools up and at around 3000 rpm I hear a clear whistle sound for a couple of secs.

I have had turbocars before, but not with such an audible whistle.

I hope its not a problem with the engine/turbo.

But I would like to check with you guys.

The mileage is 5000 km

I have a similar experience with my 1.8 TSI DSG, nowadays with almost 19,000 km.

Not always audible at the same range of revs, but perceptible when you demand a strong acceleration.

I will check it at the dealer on the next regular inspection (30,000 km).

Regards

Wife's Mk2 Scout has done it from day 1. Now has 61000 miles on it with no problems. Almost as loud as a 1982 Saab 99 Turbo I had with water injection!

Although they are precision made they are a fairly basic device. The only thing you could check, if you can get to the inlet side, is to see if there is any play on the bearings of the main shaft. Damaged bearing are the main killer of a turbo, as they spin at over 100,000rpm.

If your changing gear at 3000rpm then is probably the waste gate you can hear, sounds like air being pushed out (which it is), rather than turbo whine which sounds like wind whistling through a small gap (sucked in).

All cars should sound like this!

It not when Im changing gear/wastegate, but as the turbo is spooling up under full boost.

Is it more noticeable on cold days? Cold air is denser! As strange as it may seem, when I changed the turbo on my Saab, (numerous times due to the water injection "eating" the impeller!), they never sounded the same. Some were noisier units than others.

As I say the only way I know as a basic check, is to see if there is any play in the bearings. Although you could get someone to sit in the car and rev the engine slowly and listen to see if you can hear a metallic tinkling noise which could indicate the blades are touching the housing because the bearings have gone and the reduced, already tight clearance, is even smaller creating a smaller gap thereby increasing the noise with the very slight increase in pressure. Increased pressure in turbos is usually good for more power but not in this case as it is usually the indication it's just about to blow and spread itself around the inside of the engine!

Thanx Banksie. Well chilly, around 5-10 celcius. PS The car is just 2 months old.

Can't say I have noticed it on mine but I have been running it in a bit up till now and not really been getting high boost pressures that often

Next chance I get to coax some boost from it I will try to listen better!

I haven't noticed it either. 43000km so far.

I can hear it on mine.

Although only on fresh asphalt when the roadnoise is low.
