Winters are cold - if you've got no pre-heater

Featured Replies

Just decided to give you guys a bit of a hint in case you're suffering from the cold weather as we are here in Finland. It's been -7 to 17C for the past 2 weeks here... but no worries, I had my car fitted with a Ebersp

I like the sound of that warm cabin action... mmm...

*Wishes he ticked the heated seats box*

A nice mod to have. I could have done with something similar when I lived in W Berlin.

Excellent addition! *Wonders* if the batmobile had one :)

That sounds excellent, how much would it cost to have a system like that fitted.

And where is it fitted? - there's not much space for a diesel-fuelled heatsource.

Is this something difefrent from what you have Bryan? I thought you had something similar?

Mine's electric, and the only place we could find to fit the immersion heater cylinder was to hang it off the side of the airbox. A diesel system will be bigger and need a more solid mounting so I'm curious to know where it is fitted.

Electric's fine, as long as you can plug it in. Diesel works anywhere.

To answer your guestions:

1) it cost me 1400€ fitted, which is about 970 pounds. In here it was a cheap price, but you guys have lower vat etc.. so propably cheaper.

2) it's fitted right behind front bumper on the passenger side. Eberspächer has special version designed for tight spaces. It has a separate fuel pump, where the normal ones have all jammed in one unit. I've got the 5kw D5W S model. measures: 220x85x98mm

And as for the upgrades I'm getting later on, the gsm control is a separate smallish unit that's easy to hide as well. Also getting temp sensor for it, so I can sms in the time and the box itself calculates based on the temp when it should start heating up the car. And these also include a system to cool down the car during summer.. it'l vent the car with car's own blowers.

Kenlowe, the old electric fan people, used to make an electric one.

Dont know if it still exists.

Last car, a Saab 9.3, had this as standard although it wasnt advertised. Only found it after reading the handbook about 6 months after buying it. Used to come on if the engine wasnt up to temp and outside temp was below 5 degrees. Worked very well bit sounded like a jet engine. A plug in timer was available as well.

The frostheater one is electric and 1000 watts. So 1) it can't be used everywhere and 2) it takes ages to heat up. Now, I'm not saying it's a bad product as such - but fex for me it wouldn't work cause I'm not always parking near a wall socket.. and well, the 5kw one is much faster - 30 minutes will cover it under any circumstance. And the cabin is already warm when I get in... these electric ones only heat up the engine a bit - it's nowhere near normal running temp when you fire up the engine. I've been using one (a differrent brand) for years in my previous petrol cars.

But what fits the needs of one, doesn't necessarely fit the needs of the other. As long as it fits your needs and as long as your car is pre-heated one way or the other - the winter isn't so bad :)

I thought the same the other week when I jumped into the car on a particularly frosty morning. Upto then i've always told the missus heated seats are a bit :gay:

Thats the trouble with ordering a car in the summer, all you can think about is air con. :P

Can they be retro fitted? :o

heated seats I'm not so sure about - but the pre-heaters are no problem. I had mine retro fitted. Most likely the heated seats are no problem either.. especially after market ones fitted while you visit seat surgeons for the leather ;)

Too bad we don't have seat surgeons in here... :( I'd be ready to kill for their kind of leather seats.

Surely they are just a hop skip and a ferry ride away? Watch out for iceburgs on the way though. :)

Would propably be cheaper to have them ship over the kit and have a local specialist install the kit on my seats.. but then again the few thousand mile driver finland -> sweden -> denmark -> netherlands -> uk and back would propably be much more fun.. hmm.. summer vacation? :)
