Number plate lights

Featured Replies

How do you remove the number plate bulbs? Sounds stupid I know but I didn't want to force them by just pulling them out. Is there an easy way?

And just to clarify I mean the whole rubber casing etc out of the boot lid

Here is a video.

Btw I don't like this screwdriver method, there's a big risk of scratching the paint.

I just pushed it to the left with my fingers. You can use a plastic tool as well.

Any idea on which LED bulbs to use that dont bring up canbus warning?

Reading the various posts on here, I'd suggest the best method is to get the car configured via VCDS to accept LED bulbs, then buy LED bulbs which do not say are canbus safe (ie, without resistors). This is what I will be doing with mine for sure.

Is there VAG OEM solution for this LED bulbs?

And they don't need coding in?

And they don't need coding in?

Yes they need coding in. The OEM lights can be obtained a few places as above or skodadop and superskoda. They need a small area of plastic shaving off to fit them to the Octavia but otherwise OEM. They direct the light properly onto the number plate and if you get them from the right place not a huge amount more expensive than other stuff

Coding them is the only way to use OEM lights as you will be telling the car properly that it has LEDs that is how the factory would do it.

And they don't need coding in?

They need coding as well.

Many people failed with can-bus friendly LEDs...Octy3 is picky about the bulbs.

And most of the can-bus LED bulbs contain a parallel resistor wich generates a lot of heat and therefore dangerous.

There are OEM LED for Rapid and not for Octavia? Little bit of surprise?

Don't think Superskoda do the original VAG ones, or at least they never used to. Also, the VAG ones do not need anything shaving off them, they fit correctly.

This is the part number for the genuine VAG LED number plate light that fits in the Octavia III: 3AF943021A. Available from your friendly Skoda dealer for several arms and legs, or online somewhere...can't remember the site though  There's a thread somewhere on here where someone put the site they got them from..

The OEM VAG ones you link to are the ones that have been around for a while. They do need a tiny modification to fit the CORRET way even the OP found that out if you read the thread you link to. The location cutouts are on the opposite side on the Octy (on the 4 I have done). If you fit them as they fit through the hole they will be pointing the wrong way, not on your number plate but at the cars behind you. You just need to shave the location lugs off the lamp, I will post a pic later of what I mean.

Superskoda used to do them before they went 'mega-power', They are still available here

In a genuine Skoda packet for around a fiver (used to be a lot cheaper) they are made for the Rapid, Superb, and Yeti according to the instructions that come with them. If you cut a couple of mm off them with a Stanley knife and code them it is as OEM as you will get.

They work better than the old bulb holders as they are directed (if fitted the right way)

There maybe a newer one for the Octy but I haven't seen one

Yes please, i'm not sure what you mean.

The part number I listed is the same one I bought from the Skoda dealer (still have the packet here to prove it), it is also the same one that is fitted to the new superb.

They required no modification and fitted perfectly. I have them the other way around, (the black strip closer to the car) this was the way round the one on the Superb in Skoda's showroom was so I assumed it to be correct.

I have not seen a Superb with them in but I will look next time. When we bench tested them we found the black strip needs to be away from the car (It is the strip that keeps the light from shining backwards into the traffic behind) as the lens throws the light the other way (away from the black strip)

This is not the way the lamp fits into the Octy. But then the lamp is not listed as fitting it in the first place. To fit the lamp with the black stripe away from the car you need to shave off the locating lugs as below then it will fit the other way around. The locating cutouts are obviously on the other side to the other cars

Just for a laugh and to check my sanity I turned one around and took a couple of photos to compare (Used white paper over the number plate for clarity)

the one on the left is with the black stripe nearest the car, as it would fit unmodified. You can see it does not light the number plate as well (as it is pointing the wrong way) and a bit lower you can see the LEDs shine backwards on the left one.

What I find confusing is you say that is how you saw one on a superb, unless maybe that had been a retrofit as well?

Yes, it was an L&K in the dealers showroom, so I don't think a retrofit ... hmmm how odd... will have to try an locate another one and have a look.

Thanks for showing that, that makes a lot of sense now. You can clearly see where your way round is much brighter on the paper, although it lights up a smaller portion of it than the other way...

Might have to start shavin' me bits now so they fit properly!!

I know it does look like that in the picture because the paper was not completely flat and some of it was in shadow on the right, the light comes at a very shallow angle. it was not the easiest to do in the wind and rain!!

In practice there is a huge difference when you see it, in the brightness and the spread there is no mistaking which way round they are meant to be. They are very effective design actually

Yes they are the ones

Well, now I'm more confused. I happened to be passing a VW dealer today so thought I'd pop in and see how they did things (and to check I hadn't remembered incorrectly and was embarrassing myself)...

They also fit the LED's with the black strip towards the car! This was one of VW's 4x4's (can't remember which).

post-130909-0-51384300-1461601310_thumb.jpg

I also looked at a Golf GTI Mk7, that appeared to have a different LED light unit, similar design but with no black strip on it at all.

I don't understand, because what you're saying flybynite makes sense, and to look at your photos your way around is most certainly brighter. But why are all the dealers fitting them the other way? There must be a reason, can't see them all doing it wrong on all cars?

Yes it is a strange one,

I would not have given it a second thought had the OP in the other thread not mentioned it. We had them on the bench and asked "why cut the lugs off" when we powered them up we could see the light was biased to the one side it then made sense. But I had assumed the other VAG cars were fitted the other way around.

Its a bit of a "first world problem" as some would call it as it lights the number plate either way, but people do the mod to get a better light it is just strange they fit like that.

Mind you not the first manufacturer to make a mistake
