Goodwill gesture

Featured Replies

During a recent service carried out on my car, it was noticed there was a coolant leak which they suspect is coming from the water pump.

So to carry this work out the garage have said that I should have the timing belt and tensioners changed too.
They have quoted me £459 to have this done.

The car has only covered just over 29,000 miles and was first registered in November 2012, given the cars age and mileage and the fact it has a full service history.

I know that a water pump should last allot longer than this so I queried about getting a goodwill gesture from Skoda.

They have come back offering 35%, I know they are with in their rights to offer S.F.A, but surely 35% is a little on the low side given the age and history of the car.

FOC or take it elsewhere

then complain to Skoda UK

id have stood in the office working out what it would cost -£35................. while ringing around for a price for belt/tensioners/pump (which it doesnt need BTW) ......

I wouldn't expect it done FOC as it is outside the warranty period but I would have thought Skoda would have contributed a minimum of 50%.

have you priced the job up elsewhere?

If this sort of work is being done then i would go with having the belt done as it doesn't/shouldn't add much to the cost. Are they replacing it because it was too tight or because it was worn/loose?

I'd ask questions about "they suspect is coming from the water pump" as they should have pressure tested the system to exclude other sources and they should be able to check that pump and know.

I'd also ask about the tensioners. They shouldn't need doing at your mileage.  Maybe there is a fault there and they have not tensioned the belt and play has screwed up the pump. Conversely, one that is too tight can cause problems for the units (i.e. water pump) it drives.

I'd take the line that something was not right with the car, it has a full service history and you want better satisfaction. i cant see FOC but I'd push for at least 50% goodwill.

Whatever goodwill you decide to accept - make them explain why they want to replace these parts on a low mileage car. jump on anything that points to a factory/servicing or manufacturing issue. That's usually the best route to some half decent goodwill.

Car is almost 4 years old - timing belt should be replaced next year anyway. Having said that, I'd push for the 50%.

I had my cambelt and water pump changed for £200. Not at a Skoda dealer.

Have you had the car from new and always used the same dealer for all work? My window regulator went just outside my 1yr approved used warranty earlier this year (all work during the year was done where i purchased the car), and the offer i received from Skoda was that they would match the dealers contribution, so chase the dealer and see if they will match the 35%?

Just had a call from Skoda UK regarding the goodwill gesture, telling me that it comes from the garage and not them, yet the garage had to speak to someone to offer the 35% goodwill discount. Who did they speak to if it wasn't Skoda?

I bought the car second hand, but have always used the same Skoda dealership to do all the work on the car.

Some times you just have to take it on the chin especially if the belt is coming up for replacement.

If the price includes skodas 2 year warranty, then £300 isn't too bad. Alternatively an independent will do it cheaper

Update, Skoda UK called the dealership who then spoke to someone, they have increased the offer to 50%. It's now costing me £255 which I am happy with.
