Just wondering can they be fixed with a new gasket set or is it a case that they start leaking diesel they have to be replaced car has burst the coolant hose again due to diesel dripping onto it

It's a Octavia mk1 pd130bhp

Also is pump same on all the pd engines as have a 1.4tdi with what looks like a new pump on it

Vacuum pumps shouldn't leak diesel? They might leak engine oil but that's usually a gasket.

Its called the tandem pump because it pumps air and fuel.

 

As long as its just the seal between the pump and the head you can replace the seals. IIRC some versions have some 'O' rings and recesses for them and the later type has a machined flat face and a steel gasket. Make sure you get the right type for your pump

The tandem pump acts as an intermediate pressure pump, between the lift pump in the tank and the unit injectors (which make the crazy pressures for injection). The tandem pump feeds the fuel into a gallery in the head which supplies the injectors.

think the seal kit will be ebay only    I used 1mm  Viton sheet-- tightened bolts to 10 NM and it's lasted just 2 years   (on a ASZ)

yes   but I also replaced the original screws with stainless (longer) bolts and nuts (used like studs)
