Roof bars for hatchback

Featured Replies

Wondering about getting some roof bars as I have to move a table top. The sensible choice seems to be between Thule and OEM, with Thule being s bit cheaper.

But what's the load limit in weight? Presumably less than on the estate?

The brochure states the maximum roof load is 100kg for estate AND hatchback. Don't forget that weight includes the bars themselves, so I would probably aim for 90kg maximum on top of the bars to be safe.

Also, the max carrying weight may vary with aftermarket bars. I have always gone with the OEM bars.

I have some Thule wingbars (the same footpack/bar set fits my Yeti and our Superb estate).

Very pleased with them - they are more or less permanently fitted to the Yeti with my bike carrier on, make hardly any noise unless you're at silly speeds.

One point to note is the bars have a very slight curve upwards in the middle - something to be aware of if you're intending to strap anything completely flat to them. If you know about it, it's easy enough to work round by sticking a length of timber batten under one edge of whatever you're carrying, so it's supported at the sides instead of the centre of the bar. If that makes sense.

On the plus side, I've gone for 127cm bars which means I can put 4ft/1220mm wide boards (plywood etc) on top and have just enough bar sticking out each side to strap down to.

Thanks all. I have a nasty feeling that my table top weighs over 100 (let alone 90) kg. Time to hire a van!
