Oil temp on the maxidot.. was 97ºC - it had gone as high as 120ºC the other week, before the new thermostat and bleed reed.. today the new pump was fitted.. I was told by the guy on the service desk, that the fan which seems to switch on every so often is related to the coolant.. I read on this forum somewhere it was related to the DPF not coolant.. but there we go, either way its coming on more than it should be.

If you're saying the coolant temperature is the smalll guage under the rev counter then, okay that for the moment is staying at vertical, but on Monday it went a third of the way beyond vertical and the other week nearly hit the red area, which is when the Engine Overheat warning message appeared and this whole sorry business started...

97*oC is OK for the Oil to get to and higher, it is if it does not drop as you slow down and then the fan kicks in and the coolant cools the oil that there becomes an issue.

Coolant is supposed to get to the 88-92*oC sort of temp, (With a cold start the thermostat stays closed untill the coolant gets to heat to then heat the Oil, then start cooling the Engine & Engine Oil.)

Coolant is cooled by air passing through the radiator, fand drawing air through when the road speed is too slow for air flow, but only to a temperature to have an efficient temp & this cools Oil which also cools the engine, as well as oil being a lubricant.

So your very high coolant temperature was an issue what ever it was Thermostat partly closed, water pump, air lock or whatever.

Same as always was on engines, now just more complicated / expensive.

Okay, thanks for the info.. On my trip home tonight.. the Oil temp on the maxidot reached 101ºC which you say is probably normal.. that was 5th gear at 70mph on the motorway.. When backing off down to 60 then temp drops a few degress to say 97ºC and if I was sat at traffic lights with engine idle, it was dropping back down to 93/94ºC .. the coolant temperature did not stray beyond 90ºC tonight..

I'm hoping the new pump stays working.. it would be interesting to read in the coming months if anyone elses mk3 develops the same issue.. I may have just been unlucky.. but may be the first of many.. who knows.  Thanks again.
