Do you actually receive any refund at all on a 12 month £30 road tax fund paid after selling the car just after you've taxed it?  (within a month in this case)

You certainly do yes. I traded mine in after just paying out for a years tax of £30 and got £27.50 back being the 11 months left on it.

All full months are automatically refunded.

I had a month left on my bike road tax before i sold it.

Was quite surprised to receive a cheque for £6 something through the post a few weeks later.

I thought id have to hassle them for it tbh

Yes. Just got £50 back the other day. Only took about a week. which was a shock after previous experience with DVLA.
