Heaven and Hell

Featured Replies

For Christmas i got a couple of dvd`s. One of them was Jeremy Clarkson`s Heaven and Hell, and it`s very good.

He moaned about the Golf GTI being slow, so he had a sprint race up a runway.

He had a Golf GTI, Rover 216 and a Skoda Octavia 1.9 Diesel. Off the lights the Octavia was quickest then the Rover and then the tortoise Golf. At the finish line the Octavia was miles in front, then the crappy Rover and then way behind the Golf GTI.

I ****ed myself watching this and then got my friend round who`s got the same GTI that they raced. He has always told me how quick and good the Golf is. He now doesn`t talk to me.

Just got to mention this is the not the new golf GTI this was the heavy 2.0 gti with 115bhp.

Got the same DVD for christmas.

I like the bit where he buys a brand new perodua kaliisa with 82 miles on the clock and then smashes the hell out of it 100 yards from the showroom, before blowing it up with dynamite later.

Even the Rover 25 automatic was faster than that mk4 gti.

it's already been posted, but it's also been suggested that this was the Anniversary Edition 1.8T that got so totally whooped by both the Octy and the Rover 25...if that is indeed the 1.8T Golf, isn't the whole thing just bull****...?

did he say that?

It's a fully bodykitted up Golf GTI with the BBS 18" alloys so it's almost certainly an Anni which was is a 180bhp 1.8T or 150bhp TDI. If it was a 2.0 115bhp (which isn't a proper GTI) then I could believe the result but if it's an Anni then it's got to be fixed...

Anyone got the reg plate of the Golf so we can do a car history check?

so thats the 180 model then, whats the spec on the octy diesel? 0 - 60 times on both?

That Can't be a 180bhp Version of the Golf! If it was it was broke! AFAIK You could only Get anniversary models in Black Silver and Red!

manyo's post said it was red? wasn't the car blue?

blue !? no... it was red... deep red to be specific.

i think they were taking the p*** a bit with that, just making a point that the old golfs other than the mk1 were fat and lardy...

The golf was red, but it did seem to get a very poor start compared to the other 2 cars.

Figures (from Parkers) :

Golf :

Weight: 1279 kg

Gears: 6 Speed

Engine Size: 1781 cc

Cylinders: 4

0-60 mph: 7.6 s

Power Output: 180 bhp

Valves: 20

Torque: 235 Nm

Torque: 173 lb/ft

Top Speed: 138 mph

Octy (assuming it's a PD140 - car data check says Elegance PD) :

Weight: 1525 kg

Gears: 6 Speed

Engine Size: 1968 cc

Cylinders: 4

0-60 mph: 9.3 s

Power Output: 140 bhp

Valves: 16

Torque: 320 Nm

Torque: 236 lb/ft

Top Speed: 129 mph

The Golf is 250kg lighter and 1.7s faster to 60. Shame I can't find any 1/4 mile times further prove the point.

My opinion - it's a fix. The Octy is a damn good car, but it's not an GTI Anni beater all things being equal.

I think it was a set up, as nothing is as slow as a 216 Rover.:D
