road works around Girvan A77..

Featured Replies

Hi all, ive git a text from stena to advise the A77 is closed from girvan to Maybole this weekend - im driving over sunday night and back monday - meant to reopen monday 6am, so should be alright for the return...

Just looking at alternative routes to east glasgow, i know theres a diversion route, but the roads look poor and i dont really feel like gettin lost :D

So, any briskies around the area know where works are being carried out? And a "local knowledge" work around? The official diversion is about 20mins extra according to stena. Isnt showing on AA traffic map yet, tho temp lights in girvan are showing..

TIA

PITA.

If you just want between Girvan & Turnberry where the A77 will be closed from Friday Night,

you can just head towards the Distillery and then the 'narrow' back road to Turnberry or Kirkoswald.

(not for any big vehicles, signposts are turned around or nicked, so purely only a local route to cover the 6 miles

Girvan - Turnberry.)

But if you are coming through Girvan on the A77 heading to Maybole & Ayr follow the diversions via Dailly.

Maybe look at Cairnryan and going by Dalmellington for Glasgow.

Is that not an official suggested diversion.?

Traffic Scotland . org is useless.

EDIT.

Girvan, Dailly, Kilkerran, Crosshill, Maybole and back on the A77 seems to be the official diversion,

that will be busy enough.

Yeh as above was what i got off stena for the route..

its only for the way over as long as whatevers going on in girvan stays on schedule.

Ill look at a few maps and see what i van suss out :)

Other possibility - A75 to Dumfries, from there N/E (can't remember road number) to M74 North. That does depend on where in Glasgow you're going, but If I wanted East side I'd prefer it to the A77 anyway.

Just had a look at that - its 60 feckin miles longer than goin by the diversion by dailly...

Looking at the diversion route proerly, it kinda looks to mirror the A77 - sort east then north instead of north then east.. just a crappy(er) road..

A 60 Quick miles though..  Well sometimes.

As much as i love the beauty of Cairnryan to Ballantrae and especially Ballantrae to Girvan,  i just can not really enjoy it because of the danger of that road, Lendalfoot to Girvan being a real horror show.

There are times it can be OK, but that is not as the HGV's come from or go for ferries.

** The Official Diversion from Girvan to Maybole is OK really when being used by those that need to use that road all the time because they live and work there, lots of HGV's on it will be interesting.**

The European Funded Improved Sections on the A77 are fantastic, pity they only paid for sections and beautiful walls etc.

As "GoneOffSki" says, you can expect those 60 miles to be close to ruling speed limits (or faster if you follow an Irish registered freezer truck on the A75 ;) ). By "dailly" do you mean "St John's Town of Dalry"? (it is important to give the full name because there's at least one other place that's just "Dalry") If so, then that diversion will be on roads where you'll do well to get over 40mph.

Dailly & Old Dailly are between Girvan & Maybole on the diversion route from the A77.

* I have still not seen a description of the diversion, plenty speaking of it in the area.*

Tonight the BBC will likely catch up on such a major closure,

and Traffic Scotland will give it more prominence.

At least there is little chance of floods this weekend.

Am another one for the A75 to Dumfries then A701 to join on to the M74

Much faster and a far safer road.

I have tried them all to get to Castle Douglas area and the amount of gamblers you meet head on trying to overtake lorries is not worth it.....

Departure for phase 1 - 200odd miles to belfast - in 65mins...

aiming for lunch in belfast before ferry :)

No real issues Girvan to Maybole or Maybole Girvan on the diversion from the A77.

The Local diversion Girvan & Turnberry needs more care because many blasting those roads are being just a bit nutty.

Seemingly the A77 between Girvan & Turnberry will re-open earlier than expected, so maybe later to day.

Hhmm... worth a gamble then? Ferry is jammed after the NW200, and id say allooot of it will be going via A75...

I can tell you at 10 pm tonight if it is back running as normal between Turnberry and Girvan.

Be a bit late... gettin off the feery in a minite once they have the rope lines tied - tge anchor thingy is after calving, so doing it old school :D

If you want food,

Graziano's Chip Shop (Harbour Cafe) on your left just as you arrive facing the Harbour at the mini roundabout.

You are going right.

Blaggis Supper, Chiili Haggis or a woinderful Fish & Chips for £6.10.

All open, signs for diversion down.

Some potholes filled and and a little amount of resurfacing is all that got done.

Well, ive been talkin ****e with in laws til now. The A77 was open, only delays were - being stuck down the bowels of the ship meant i was last off, but not last out of the port thanks to how the queues worked out. And the temp light at the top of the hill 3miles out of cairnryan were a pita. Other than that it was fine.

some guy in a mk3 golf who was in front of me at the lights went the preemptive diversion route just on the south side of girvan coalpots rd i believe.. He slid past me as i turned off the M80just as i turned off to stop at asda bishopbrigg...

Cheers mate; the A701 is the number I couldn't remember (because I know the route well enough to not actually need road numbers!!)

Also, i dunno why, but the drive up the A77, even with traffic and avg speed cameras i find it more relaxing than the motorway drive to get to belfast for the ferry

You're not driving to a deadline maybe?

Get a tractor in front between Ayr and Girvan and you can be in  trouble for keeping an appointment or worse someone that decides 40 - 45 mph is fast enough to lead a convoy at.

It is amazing how many do not notice through Maybole High Street is a 20 mph Speed Limit.

I have no Idea how McBurney HGVs seem to not need to stay at the NSL for their vehicles, or within the Average Speed Cameras at 50 or 60 mph.You might have noticed the newer Average Speed Cameras at the 30mph limit in to villages.

It is a route you just have to chill on and 30 miles might take 40 minutes of 80 minutes, you never know.

I expect some Gumball 3000 vehicles Registered Keepers of Vehicles will have tickets in the post now from their little trip along part of the A77 from Cairnryan & through South Ayrshire.
