Air Filter Replacement Interval

Featured Replies

Hi folk, just been reading through the fixed posts on the top of page and I see one lists the interval for changing the air filter as being every 6 years or something like 55,000 miles .... Surely this can't be correct, I've never gone more than 2 years without changing mines irrespective of mileage in previous cars and since I started doing 15-18,000 miles per year I change it every 10,000 miles along with the oil and filter change.... They only cost £6 or £7

Yeah i think your right buddy they do say 6 years iirc and i agree it's way too long. I used to change mine every year but my mileage was usually about half of what you are currently doing. When i replaced it it was always still fairly clean so started missing a year and by the second service it was due a change. I would say at your current mileage a filter every year is bang on.

I must admit on my Citroen C5 diesel it's service interval was 12,000 miles and I'd change it every service with the Octavia being less At just under 10,000 I was tempted to go every 2nd service but for the sake of a couple of pound is it worth it....

For the price of it, I just change mine annually, even though I do about 7k a year tops.

+1 as per above.

For the cost of it just replace it every year or service

Thanks guys for the sake of £7 I think I'll just replace it at every oil and filter change ...

I changed the pollen filter when I bought the car last July as I couldn't find any paperwork saying it had been done recently, it was absolutely filthy and disgusting, but I didn't replace it in Feb when the oil and filter where done so I'll do that next time and see how it looks as again as its only a few £s and will double check when the fuel filter was changed as it's mentioned on one of the service receipts as being changed ... I think it was around 55,000 miles and I'll be about 88,000 at next service

As others, I service the car annually and only do 6,000 max in that timescale but always change the oil/oil filter, fuel filter, air filter and pollen filter.

My interval recommendation is 6yrs or 60k-ish miles. I have changed the air filter on my car 3 times. Once at 37k miles when I bought it. Once at 47k miles and the last at 57k miles. I can say that there was literally no need to change it the second or third time but was worth it the first time. So if 37k was worth it and 10k wasn't, then maybe somewhere at 20k is good?

Yes agreed around 20k seems a good mileage. No need to change something if it doesn't need replaced no matter how much it costs.

I do mine every 3rd service (45,000km).  It always looks clean but I think it's the stuff you can't see that's the issue.

I also do my pollen filter every 12 months.

Even at dealer prices, neither are overly expensive but quality aftermarket is cheap

I just bought an OEM quality air filter (MANN) from Eurocarparts for less than £10 delivered to my door.

If you drive a diesel (some petrol engines too), then you have a MAF sensor. This automatically adjusts throttle demand when air flow is restricted, so the only consequence is automatically limited torque/power. No other detrimental effect, it wont harm your engine.

So all you will notice is the car gets slower, however the air filter needs to be really blocked up before you get to that stage.

I guess everyone has a varied experience. Depending your driving conditions and mileage you do, make a judgement on your air filter replacement intervals. Maybe keep a filter diary lol!

Its probably has such long intervals as its so hard to change.

Hi Baldy1926, the airlifter on the Mk2 Octavia is an easy job to do ... There's only a handful of screw to come out and lift the lid away .. It's 10 minutes maybe 15 minutes tops to change it.

I think he was having a joke

It's no joke on the TFSI!

Thats the one i was thinking off, i've had 3 attempts at mine so far and not got any where near being able to change it.

Need to get the plastic cover off. Then remove about 8 torx screws. Pull the 2 sides apart. Remove air filter fit new one. Then refitting is the reverse

You are welcome to come and demonstrate on my car. In my 3 attempts i've never managed to release 1 corner of the engine cover.

I had the same trouble with my friends Seat Leon. I literally thought I was going to break it but It came off eventually. There is nothing more holding down the engine cover other than what is detailed in the above link.

It just takes a LOT of force. If you sent it into the garage, I'm sure they will also be using brute force lol.

panel filer cleaned every 5K.  Same time as an oil change, then again at 10k when I have a service.
