Help - Coolant in Clutch Bell Housing ?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Hope someone may be able to help,

Just purchased a Octy 2001,

Had a problem with the temp gauge on the way home so changed the sensor from my old Octy, Quite bit of coolant came out, topped it up and tried to start the car and now starts Whizzes and cuts out.

On closer inspection I noticed there wasnt a rubber stopper on the bell housing just below the coolant sensor, and think that some may of got in there ?

Will it dry, or can it be drained ? Im worried it will get into the gearbox etc and Knacker it ?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance

It will dry,you can give a ride to your car so you can see it all by yourself. It won't get in to the gearbox from there, if it could get in the gearbox that would mean that transmission oil would come out (gearbox is sealed) of there and would cause the clutch to slip.

OK Thanks

It Turns over and Starts then a Whizzing sound and cuts out like its the transmission ?

The engine cuts out? Or the sound?

It starts, then Whizzes and then the engine cuts out ?

And that wasn't a symptom before you drop coolant fluid to the hole? It shouldn't had to do anything with the particular hole you uploaded on the photo. Perhaps it went and anywhere else? There are some cable connectors at that side over the gearbox. One of those cables is for the crankshaft trigger sensor.

No Was running great, maybe the coolant has gone elsewhere then, I did try to soak it up, Should I take a look at the crankshaft trigger sensor and dry that maybe ?

Thanks for your help here! - just worried Ive knacked my new motor !

Do you have access to VagCom scanner to take a look if there are any fault codes? The part you changed is the same as your old? S.N. ? Perhaps you should take a look to what other places the coolant went.

Thanks - will do, the coolant did pour out about abit, about a cup full ? - could it be the crankshaft sensor, would that problem make the car turnover / whizz and then cut out ?

The symptom you describe in a good day, shouldn't have nothing to do, at all, with the coolant pour, every one who changes that particular sensor can pour some coolant out, but that doesn't mean that all of cars have problem after that. So without a fault scan is a bit difficult to know exactly what has happened. To my opinion you just have to make sure that there is no moisture at all in the engine bay especially in electric components, cables, clips and then run a fault scan and write down the fault codes which are stored and inform here.

Thank you,

It started then Whizzing noise and cut out straight after the coolant sensor change, so I assumed it must be to do with the split fluid, But will try to dry the electrical components, I have left it a good few hours now and still is doing it, and have also noticed when trying to start it, there is a loss of coolant ? - but isnt leaking from the sensor.  will have to try and recover it to the local garage !
