Diagnose my PC problem and win a prize*...

Featured Replies

My old PC has been having a few issues of late, can anyone help.

My screen goes a bit funny now and again (every 20 mins), it usually starts when scrolling and gets worst and worst until you can't make the screen out... :thumbdwn: It is fine for another 2-20 minutes after a restart...SO, what could it be, any ideas? Graphics card

*subject to hooky terms and conditions... so hooky that you would be a fool to collect it!

Graphics card memory :)

Is it all soldered on, or is some removable? Is any removable memory seated properly?

Have you access to another monitor and cables?

That would be my first check.

Does your Graphics card have a fan on it?

If so, it could be clogged up causing the GFX CPU to overheat.

Mine too, now I think about it:O

Bedtime.....

Err... (warning: Non tech answer coming up), err, it has got a deadicated 64mb graphics card in it, and is not built into the motherboard... I think any memory is soldered onto the board. Please note, it has taken a few knocks (punches in anger:rolleyes: ) over the two years of it's life! I thinking it may be down to that! :o

Long shot: reinstall the graphics drivers.

Most likely: The graphics card is dying, get a new one :)

Erm, if you've managed to get a screenshot of it on here, then it's not going to be monitor or cabling.

Have you had the PC freezing or re-starting itself? I'd give some new drivers a shot, but I doubt that will cure it. If it's a 64mb card like you say it probably doesn't owe you anything. You'll be able to pick up a perfectly respectable AGP 128mb card for £25 these days :)

Yes I have, and that may explain the punch marks in the side of the case and the fact I now have a 20" iMac...

tbh, I'm only wanting to fix it so I can flog it, though I doubt I'll get too much for it now! :o

I may well have an 8 or 16mb AGP card spare, if you just want it working to move on. I'll have a check tomorrow and let you know.

Wardy, thanks for the offer, but it has an on board graphics card too... I could probably use that one, if I knew how to change it over...

Ah right, no worries. In that case, you might find that if you just remove the card from its slot, then power up?

If not, it'll likely be a BIOS setting. May well be in the 'Integrated Peripherals' section or something similar, to enable the onboard graphics.

The HPs we use at work are clever enough to update themselves if you're fitting a dedicated card, or reverting from one back to onboard....

Pull the bleeder out... Cheers, I'll be trying this in the next few days, I'll let you know how I get on!

Don't forget to disconnect the monitor cable from the back of the graphics card, and reconnect it into the VGA connector alongside all the other motherboard connectors :)

Ok Ok, I'm not that stupid, I think I'd struggle to remove the graphics card without disconnecting the cable first! :D

Though I have helped some pretty dumb people in my time...

I used to work for Tiny Computers doing tech support, so we got the worst idiots out there. And they nearly all did it. If the PC had an onboard and a seperate VGA card, they'd plug it into the onboard, always. Simple mistake to make
