Gear Linkage Major Problem

Featured Replies

hi I am new here always used it for info but now I'm stumped..... I followed  the step by step on resetting/adjusting the gear linkage on my fabia vrs, I did it all as said but for some reason it wont select first or second gear now and to select first I have push the gear stick down and left as if I would be putting it in reverse :/. not sure what I've done wrong.

any help would be appreciated thank you

Did you lock the gear stick in place?

yep

Have you tried turning it off and back on again? Ie redo the gear linkage.

yea done it several times still the same, could it have anything to do with the locking pin on the gearbox heard it can be damaged or turned the wrong way not locking the mech properly, also could it have lost alignment or anything major in the box its self

I don't know enough to help. Soz. Someone may come along in a bit?

I very much doubt it will be anything inside the gearbox. Maybe the plastic clamps at the end of the cables aren't gripping properly. Seen that happen before.

These I mean...

what would you suggest some WD40 try and free them off a bit and try adjust it again, they did seem very stiff when clipping them back

I did this, I was absolutely stumped too and fuming because it was cold and late at night.

In the end what I had to do was get someone in the car moving through the gears whilst I tried to understand it all, get it so it was able to move through the gears, get reverse and first the correct way round again and then basically looked at the markings on the linkages of where the clamps used to be and did loads of little adjustments to get it right.

Absolute PITA

where do I make the adjustments though because I'm not exactly clued up with this type of thing just followed the how to as it seemed simple...would it be better a garage doing this

This video might help you...

Yeah that's the video I attempted to follow haha!

I would advise a garage doing it if you're stuck though, maybe ring some up and ask?

I'm not much help but all I did was just put the plastic clamps back where they were, give that a go

Hi

Just had to reset mine as couldn't get reverse, took four attempts!

Final successful attempt:

Tension the springs with plastic clips, locked gearbox, locked gear stick.

Release spring tensioners, unlocked gearbox then unlocked gear stick.

I had an issue with the left to right cable when I went to reset the linkage (couldn't get 1st, 2nd or reverse). When I had released the locking collars on the cable end the three "jaws" were still stuck around the cable. Prised them gently off with a screwdriver and the cable instantly shot to the correct position. Put it all back together and the linkage was silky smooth and had all gears back. Worth looking out for if you do a linkage reset.

Had ~ same problem when 1st attempted resetting...cause was lever at gearbox which with first attempt wasn't really locked in home position.

But to be true, I even didn't tried to remember what gears doesn't work after resetting- it was obvious that some stupid small mistake from my side caused it :-)

Yes, in video and repair manual everything looked nice&easy- but in reality I wasn't 100% sure- it's locked or no / locking pin somehow moved and somehow fixed somewhat :-) / "ok, maybe lever locked already" > and with 1st attempt of releasing plastic knobs on cables- total mess with gears.

Tried again with moving that lever to all directions :-) and at same time gently moved locking pin > and in one moment- YES- when lever was locked in home position- it WAS locked > pin nicely went in and, when turned up, gave un-doubtful 100% feeling haha that lever is locked indeed.

P.S.

Before resetting gear change was quite ok (i.e., as usual, I searched for problems ^  :p ) - but after resetting it get much better, serious.
